Backdrop can keep your beautiful animated wallpapers running even when your Mac is locked, creating a stunning visual experience on your Lock Screen.
Enabling Lock Screen Support
To enable Lock Screen support in Backdrop:
- Open the Backdrop app from your Applications folder or Launchpad
- Go to Settings by clicking the gear icon in the app or using the menu bar
- Toggle "Enable Lock Screen" - you'll find this option in the settings panel
- Follow the setup instructions that appear after enabling the feature
Once enabled, your animated wallpapers will continue playing even when your Mac is locked, giving you a dynamic Lock Screen experience.
Your Backdrop wallpapers will appear in the macOS System Settings just like native video wallpapers, integrating seamlessly with your system.
Use your wallpaper as the screen saver
With Lock Screen support enabled, macOS also plays your selected Backdrop wallpaper as the screen saver when your Mac is idle, just like Apple's own aerial wallpapers. You can change the idle timing in System Settings › Lock Screen.

Troubleshooting
If Lock Screen support isn't working:

- Wait up to 5 seconds after selecting a wallpaper - it can take a moment before it's ready to play on the Lock Screen
- Restart Backdrop if the feature stops working
