16 Nature Live Wallpapers for Mac: Forests, Peaks & Meadows
If your desk faces a wall, your wallpaper is the only window you've got. A nature live wallpaper puts a forest, a mountain or a field of grass behind your apps, and the slow movement makes it feel like a view rather than a photo. Backdrop's public gallery has hundreds of landscapes, and I picked 16: four forests, four mountains and sunsets, four fields and skies, and four painted or game-style scenes.
These open in Backdrop, which is a Mac-only app for macOS 15 Sequoia and newer. You can try it without paying: the trial never expires, and you get up to three wallpapers with a watermark, enough to test a forest, a peak and a field of grass on your own screen.
| Mood | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Calm and green | Forest trees by Nick | Sun breaks through tall pines onto a mossy slope, and only the light and leaves move. 4K. |
| Mountain sunset | Mount Fuji Sunset by Backdrop User | Fuji's peak glows pink above layers of blue haze, and the scene barely moves. 4K. |
| Moving grass | Wavy Grass by Backdrop User | Tall grass sways in thick fog through a loop over a minute and a half long. |
The images here are stills; the moving version of each is one click away on its gallery page, linked from the pick's name. Every pick was uploaded by a Backdrop community member, and I've credited each one under the name shown in the gallery. Rainy forests live in the rain live wallpapers roundup, snowy ones in the winter live wallpapers list, and starry skies in the space live wallpapers guide.
Forests and Trees
Mostly real forest footage. These are the greenest picks, and three of them are about as calm as a live wallpaper gets.
Forest

Gallery credit: K丶vin. The largest source in this list: 6000 × 4000, so it stays sharp on a 5K or 6K display. It's a deep green pine forest with moss and ferns underfoot, and it is almost still. The movement in its four-second loop is so slight you'll take it for a photo. Pick it if you want the look of a forest without anything moving at all.
Forest trees

Gallery credit: Nick. The sun sits low behind the pines and lights up a mossy bank, while the leaves stir and the light flickers a little. The 30-second loop is long enough that you won't catch the repeat. 4K.
Morning forest stream

Gallery credit: Nick. The one with water. Sunbeams cut through morning mist and the stream runs and sparkles across the bottom of the frame. It moves more than the other forests, but the motion is all in the lower half, so your menu bar and the top of your windows sit over calm trees. 4K.
Sequoia Night

Gallery credit: Cupcake. The dark forest. Giant sequoia trunks stand in near-black, and a cold glow lights the mist between them as it drifts. The loop runs almost five minutes, the longest in this list, so it never feels like it repeats. It suits a dark-mode Mac. 4K.
Mountains and Sunsets
Two views of Mount Fuji, one autumn ridge and one perfectly still lake.
Autumn Sunset

Gallery credit: Nick. A good fit for November. Golden larches catch low sun against a rocky peak and a clean blue sky, and the branches sway in the wind. It's bright and warm without being busy. 4K.
Mount Fuji Sunset

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. Fuji from far away at the end of the day: an orange sky, a pink-lit summit and rows of hazy ridges fading to purple. Almost nothing moves, which makes it one of the easiest picks to leave on all day. The open sky at the top keeps desktop icons readable. 4K.
Twilight at Mount Fuji

Gallery credit: Aaron. The painted Fuji. A field of purple flowers runs up to the mountain under a pink-clouded sky, and the flowers and the little tree sway while the clouds drift. It's softer and more colourful than the photo above, closer to an anime background. 4K.
Autumn Peaceful Alpine Lake

Gallery credit: His Frogness. A mirror. A steep rock face and a band of autumn trees reflect in a perfectly calm lake, with only the faintest ripple in the reflection. The pale sky keeps the menu bar and desktop icons easy to read in Light Mode. 4K.
Fields, Skies and Meadows
Grass, flowers and clouds. Most of these move more than the forests, though the first is the calmest to look at.
Wavy Grass

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. The quiet one. Tall grass sways in a fog that hides everything beyond the field, so the top half of the screen is plain soft grey. That makes it one of the best wallpapers here for working: nothing competes with your windows. The loop is 97 seconds long. 1080p, so it looks softer on a large external display than on a laptop.
Windy Morning Fields

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. The gallery lists it as "windy-morning-fields.3840x2160", which tells you two things: it's 4K, and it's windy. Feathery white grass bends hard in the foreground while the sun rises over the field. Of the meadows, this is the one with the most motion and the most light. 4K.
Summer Mountain Paradise

Gallery credit: Aaron. A painted summer afternoon: a path through white wildflowers, a lake, green mountains and towering clouds. The flowers and grass sway and the clouds drift. It's the most cheerful pick in the post. 4K.
Clouds

Gallery credit: Nick. Just sky. White clouds roll across blue, and the whole frame moves. It's the only pick with no fixed subject, and with no horizon either, it works well behind a busy desktop because there's nothing for your eye to land on. 4K.
Painted and Game Landscapes
Illustrated scenes rather than footage, one of them from a video game.
Large Sakura Tree

Gallery credit: Cupcake. A single cherry tree in full bloom under huge summer clouds, drawn in an anime style. Petals drift through the air while the tree itself stays still. The pink tree against a deep blue sky makes it the boldest colour in this section. 4K.
Moonlight Lake

Gallery credit: muri. A painted lake under a huge pale moon, in vivid blues bright enough to pass for day, with pines on one shore and a leaning tree on the rocks. Light rays and small sparkles shimmer over the scene; nothing else moves. It's the cooler partner to the sakura tree. 4K.
The Valley

Gallery credit: Maezoroth. Flat, layered mountains in pink and violet under a pastel sky. Soft clouds drift and the grass sways along the bottom edge. It's a 3440 × 1440 ultrawide source, so it's made for a wide monitor; on a 16:10 MacBook screen the sides are cropped.
Celeste Mountain

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. The mountain from the game Celeste, drawn in low-poly blues. Clouds circle the peak and stars move behind it in a two-minute loop. If you've climbed it, you'll know it; if you haven't, it still works as a calm night mountain. 1080p.
How to Set a Nature Live Wallpaper on Your Mac
macOS can show photos, Apple's dynamic wallpapers and its aerial videos in Wallpaper settings, but it can't play a looping scene you pick yourself. Backdrop adds that, and each pick above opens directly in the app:
- Download Backdrop and open it.
- Open a pick's gallery page from this list, watch the preview, then choose Open in Backdrop.
- Click the wallpaper in Backdrop to download it and set it as your desktop. On macOS 26 or later it plays on the Lock Screen as well; on macOS 15 Sequoia, turn on Lock Screen support in Backdrop's Settings first. How to change your Mac Lock Screen walks through it.

For the full walkthrough, see how to set a video as your wallpaper on macOS. For more scenes like these, browse the gallery's landscape category.
Tip: Make a nature playlist. Put a forest, a mountain and a meadow in one and let Backdrop rotate them on a timer, with its own playlist on each display if you use more than one. Backdrop wallpaper playlists shows how.
Will a Live Wallpaper Slow Down Your Mac?
In everyday use, you shouldn't notice it. Backdrop stops playing the wallpaper while an app fills the screen and saves more energy when you're on battery. Cindori's own figure, as of November 2026, is "Less than 0.3% CPU usage when running on a MacBook Pro". If motion distracts you while you work, Forest and Mount Fuji Sunset are the stillest scenes here. The live wallpaper performance guide has the numbers.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Are these nature live wallpapers free on Mac?
Up to three are free to use, watermarked, for as long as you like. Removing the watermark and unlocking the whole gallery costs, as of November 2026, 1.99 a month, 14.99 a year or $29.99 once for a lifetime license (US prices).
Is there a Mount Fuji live wallpaper for Mac?
Yes, two in this list: Mount Fuji Sunset, a near-still photo of the peak at dusk, and Twilight at Mount Fuji, an illustrated version with a flower field that sways. Both open in Backdrop.
Which nature wallpapers are 4K?
Forest is a 6000 × 4000 source. Forest trees, Morning forest stream, Sequoia Night, Autumn Sunset, both Fuji scenes, Autumn Peaceful Alpine Lake, Windy Morning Fields, Summer Mountain Paradise, Clouds, Large Sakura Tree and Moonlight Lake are 4K. The Valley is 3440 × 1440 ultrawide, and Wavy Grass and Celeste Mountain are 1080p.
Can macOS play a moving nature wallpaper on its own?
macOS includes Apple's own aerial landscape videos, but you can't add your own moving scenes in Wallpaper settings. To use a forest or meadow loop like the ones above, you need an app such as Backdrop.
Can I use these on Windows or my phone?
No. These scenes play through Backdrop, and Backdrop only runs on Macs with macOS 15 Sequoia or newer. There's no Windows, iPhone or Android version.
Start with Forest trees if you want green and calm, then try Autumn Sunset while the leaves outside are still gold.
