18 Space Live Wallpapers for Mac: Black Holes to Nebulae
Open your MacBook at night and there's a black hole turning slowly behind your windows. That's the appeal of a space live wallpaper: deep blacks, one bright subject and a sense of scale your to-do list can't compete with. These 18 come from Backdrop's public gallery, which has about 200 space and sci-fi loops. I've grouped them into black holes, planets, astronauts, nebulae, and sci-fi stations, and noted how much each one moves.
Backdrop is a Mac app for macOS 15 Sequoia or later. Its free trial has no time limit and lets you use up to three watermarked wallpapers, so you can try a few of these before you buy.
| If you want… | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The classic black hole | Interstellar Gargantua | A golden accretion disk curls around pure black, in 4K. |
| Something that barely moves | Astronaut Facing Black Hole | A lone astronaut on the Moon watches a black hole; only the glow shifts. |
| A loop with real motion | Space Train | A subway train pulls into a station that floats beside Earth. |
The images below are still posters. Open a pick's page to watch the loop before you choose. Every one is a community upload, credited to the person who posted it. The rest are on the space tag page and in the sci-fi category.
Black Hole Live Wallpapers
The classic space theme, and the easiest way to make a dark desktop look dramatic.
Interstellar Gargantua

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. The Gargantua look from Interstellar: a perfect black circle ringed by thin golden light, with the disk flowing slowly across the front. The loop runs a full minute, so it never feels repetitive.
Black Hole

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. Warmer and brighter than Gargantua. An orange ring burns in the center, a white beam slices across it, and the clouds below glow violet. It's 4K, so it stays crisp on a big display.
Singularity

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A violet black hole with a tiny ship on the left edge of its disk, while chunks of rock drift past. Look closely and there's a little story in it. It's QHD, so it's slightly soft on a 5K display.
Silver Surfer Cosmic Void

Gallery credit: JM89. Almost monochrome: a tiny Silver Surfer stands below a giant funnel of white light, with a bright star flaring to the right. Only the small orb and the light around it drift, so it's calmer than it looks.
The Devourer

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A black hole with cat ears and a happy face. It's the one pick here that doesn't take space seriously, and the stars around it barely twinkle, so it works fine as an everyday desktop.
Planet Live Wallpapers
Ringed giants, Earth at night and alien horizons.
Saturn

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A ringed planet rises over the blue rim of a closer world, with a star flaring behind it. Cool blues all the way through, and the movement is gentle.
Night Earth

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. Earth turns slowly in the center of the frame, its night side dotted with city lights. The planet sits in the middle with plenty of black around it.
Where Ocean Meets Another World

Gallery credit: JM89. The one light pick in this list: a pale sea with waves rolling in, and a giant ringed planet hanging in a hazy sky. If you use light mode, start here. It's QHD.
Red Moon, Black Dune

Gallery credit: MajsaM. A huge crimson moon sits still behind black dunes while the dunes below slowly shift. Just two colors, red and black, which makes it striking on an OLED or mini-LED screen.
Astronaut Live Wallpapers
A human figure gives space its sense of scale.
Astronaut Facing Black Hole

Gallery credit: JM89. An astronaut sits on the Moon with their back to you, watching a golden black hole fill the sky. It's one of the stillest loops here, and the bright lunar ground fills the bottom of the screen.
Astronaut In Space

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. An illustrated astronaut drifts through the stars cradling a glowing rainbow jellyfish. The rest of the screen is deep navy, so your icons stay easy to spot.
Floating in Space

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. An astronaut wades through a sea of pink and blue light while waves of it roll across the screen. This is the busiest pick in the list, and the loop is almost two minutes long. Save it for a second display.
Nebula and Galaxy Live Wallpapers
Clouds of color and spinning stars, with no single subject.
Galaxy Spiral

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A teal spiral galaxy turns around its glowing core. It fills the middle of the screen without crowding the corners.
Purple Space

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. Magenta clouds swirl around a blazing white star. It's the most saturated pick in the list. The loop is only six seconds, but the glow shifts smoothly.
Wormhole

Gallery credit: Maezoroth. Stars streak past as you fly toward a glowing blue core. The source is 7680 × 3292, the only one here bigger than 4K, and its extra-wide shape suits an ultrawide monitor.
Sci-Fi Station and Machine Live Wallpapers
Places and machines out on the edge of space.
Satellite Dish - Voices Of The Void

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. Radio dishes stand on a dark hill, their red lights blinking while shooting stars cross the sky. The title nods to the indie game Voices of the Void. It's very dark, so your windows sit easily on top of it.
Space Train

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A subway platform floats in orbit, Earth fills the left side, and a train rolls in toward you. It's a scene with a plot, so it's more fun to watch than to work over.
Water Station

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A huge industrial platform rises from a dark sea under a ringed planet and a pink horizon. The water moves and the station's lights glow, and that's about it. I'd happily work in front of this one all day.
How to Set a Space Live Wallpaper on Your Mac
macOS's own Wallpaper settings cover photos, dynamic wallpapers and Apple's aerials, but not a video loop you pick yourself. Backdrop adds that, plus the gallery these picks come from.
- Download Backdrop and open it on a Mac running macOS 15 or later.
- Open a pick's page from this list, preview the loop, then choose Open in Backdrop.
- Click the wallpaper in Backdrop to download it and set it as your desktop. On macOS 26 or later it plays on the Lock Screen too. On macOS 15 Sequoia, turn on Lock Screen support in Backdrop's Settings first; how to change your Mac Lock Screen has the details.

The full walkthrough is in how to set a video as your wallpaper on macOS.
One Universe Per Display
Dark space scenes look great in dark mode, and they look even better across two screens. With more than one monitor, each display can play a different loop: Night Earth on your laptop and Wormhole on the ultrawide, for example. See different live wallpapers on multiple Mac displays. On macOS 26 or later, Backdrop 2.10 also lets you give every desktop Space its own wallpaper.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do I get a space live wallpaper on my Mac?
Install Backdrop, open a loop such as Galaxy Spiral from its gallery page with Open in Backdrop, and click it in the app to set it as your desktop.
Are space live wallpapers free on Mac?
Backdrop's trial has no time limit and lets you use up to three watermarked wallpapers. Buying Backdrop removes the watermark and unlocks the full gallery: as of October 2026 that's 1.99 a month, 14.99 a year or $29.99 once for a lifetime license (US prices).
Is there a black hole live wallpaper for Mac?
Yes, several. Interstellar Gargantua, Black Hole and Singularity are the three to try first, and Astronaut Facing Black Hole adds a figure on the Moon watching one.
Will a space live wallpaper drain my battery?
Backdrop uses less than 0.3% CPU on a MacBook Pro (as of October 2026) and pauses playback when a full-screen app covers the desktop. More in live wallpapers and Mac performance.
Which of these space wallpapers are 4K?
Fourteen of the 18 come from 4K or larger sources, and Wormhole is bigger than 4K. Singularity, The Devourer, Where Ocean Meets Another World and Satellite Dish - Voices Of The Void are QHD.
Start with Interstellar Gargantua for the classic look, and keep Water Station for the days you want something quieter.
