16 Cozy Live Wallpapers for Mac: Lofi, Cafés & Fireplaces
It's late, the tea's gone cold and the essay is still half-written. A cozy live wallpaper won't finish it for you, but a lamp-lit study room or a flickering fire behind your windows makes the long evening feel a lot friendlier. Backdrop's public gallery has hundreds of cozy and lofi scenes, so I went through them and kept 16: four study rooms, four cafés and reading nooks, four fireplaces and warm rooms, and four outdoor spots for when you want fresh air without leaving the desk.
One thing first: Backdrop runs on Macs only, with macOS 15 Sequoia or later. The free trial has no time limit and lets you use up to three watermarked wallpapers, which is plenty to try a study room, a café and a fireplace side by side.
| Mood | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Study session | Study Girl by Backdrop User | A desk lamp, a stack of books and a city at night, in 4K with very little movement. |
| Coffee shop | Autumn Park Café by Celine | A glowing café among red maple trees while the dusk clouds drift overhead. |
| Fireside | Fireplace by His Frogness | Real flames over stacked logs, filmed close up in 4K. |
The pictures below are still frames; open a pick's heading to watch the loop on its gallery page. All 16 are community uploads, credited by the name the gallery shows. Rainy-window scenes have their own list in the rain live wallpapers roundup.
Lofi Study Rooms
Headphones on, lamp on, a cat somewhere nearby. These are the scenes people mean when they search for a lofi wallpaper.
NOexistenceN of Lilith

Gallery credit: Isla. One of the most popular cozy pages in the gallery, and the room is the reason. Lilith sits by the window of a bedroom crammed with posters, figures and a bean bag, and she sways gently while her long white hair moves. The cool blue and white palette makes it the brightest study room here, and it's a 4K source.
Lofi Girl

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. If you've ever studied to a lofi stream, you'll recognise the look: big headphones, a striped cat on the windowsill, rooftops stretching away outside. Her hand keeps writing through the 20-second loop and almost nothing else moves. Warm oranges and greens, in 4K.
Study Girl

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. My pick for actual work. She sits with her back to you, the lamp throws a warm pool of light over the books, and the city glows outside. The motion is very slight and the loop runs over a minute, so you'll never catch the repeat. Dark edges and bookshelves on both sides leave room for your desktop icons.
Lofi Girl Outdoor

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. The late-night version: a balcony desk, fairy lights along the wall, a cat on the railing and the city below. Her laptop screen changes as she works and the loop is a very long 2.5 minutes. It's a 1080p source, so it looks best on a MacBook rather than a big 4K monitor.
Cafés and Reading Nooks
Somewhere to sit with a coffee and a book, from a neon-lit coffee shop to a library with no walls.
Autumn Park Café

Gallery credit: Celine. A glass-fronted café glows orange on an empty street while the clouds drift and red leaves fall. The pink and purple sky makes it the most colourful pick in the list, and it's perfect for October and November. QHD source.
Snowy Night Lofi City

Gallery credit: muri. A tiny ramen bar at the top of a snowy hill, lanterns lit and stools waiting, with the whole city glowing blue below. Snow falls through the 17-second loop. The contrast between the warm shopfront and the cold street is what sells it. 4K.
Kitty: Dreamy Garden Library

Gallery credit: Celine. A black cat curled up with a book on a velvet sofa, in a library that's open to the sky. Bookshelves climb with roses, string lights hang overhead and the cat blinks now and then. It's the most whimsical scene in the list and still calm enough to work in front of.
Quiet Spring Day

Gallery credit: Celine. The only daylight reading nook here. Books, a coffee and a cushion on the window seat, then a still lake and a stone house framed by blossom. The flowers sway and the water ripples, so it moves more than most picks but always softly. It suits a Mac running in light appearance.
Fireplaces and Warm Interiors
For when the room you're actually sitting in is a bit too cold.
Fireplace

Gallery credit: His Frogness. No illustration, just real fire. Logs burn and flames climb against a black background, which makes this the liveliest loop in the list, and the black edges keep windows and icons easy to read. The 4K source keeps the embers sharp.
Quiet Fireplace Evening

Gallery credit: Celine. The illustrated version, and the coziest room in the post. A black cat dozes on a red blanket, the stove burns, the tea steams on the table and twilight turns purple outside. Only the fire and the steam really move.
Vinyl Record Player 2

Gallery credit: Nick. A record turning under the tonearm in a dim room, with evening light blurred in the window behind. It's the most minimal pick here. Put a playlist on and it feels like the wallpaper is playing it. 4K.
Lo-fi Room

Gallery credit: TheDaniyel. Every other room in this section is dark. This one is a bright, lived-in apartment on a sunny afternoon, with a loft bed, a gaming desk, a kotatsu and plants in every window. The light shifts gently in a short six-second loop. Pick it when you want cozy without the evening.
Cozy Outdoors
Campsites, a hobbit hole and a quiet bus stop: cozy doesn't have to mean indoors.
Golden Hour at the Hobbit Hole

Gallery credit: Celine. Gandalf rests on a bench outside a round wooden door while the sun sets over the Shire. Smoke curls from the chimney and from his pipe, and that's about all that moves. The golden light makes it the warmest outdoor scene here.
Camping by the River

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A glowing tent and a campfire on the riverbank, with the firelight flickering across the water. It's a dark scene with one warm point of light at the left, so windows and icons sit cleanly on the rest. 4K.
LoFi Girl looking at the sky

Gallery credit: LYzmin41. A girl with pink hair sits in the grass and watches the stars with a small companion beside her. She and the grass sway while stars twinkle overhead, in a 10-second 4K loop. Sweet without being busy, and it looks lovely against a purple accent colour.
Waiting With Stars

Gallery credit: Kun. An empty bus stop by the sea, one glowing vending machine and a cat waiting under the shelter. The clouds drift and the first stars come out. It's one of the calmest picks in the list and the one I'd leave on behind a full day of windows.
How to Set a Cozy Live Wallpaper on Your Mac
macOS can show photos, Apple's dynamic wallpapers and its aerial videos in Wallpaper settings, but it can't play a looping scene you pick yourself. Backdrop adds that, and each pick above opens directly in the app:
- Download Backdrop and open it.
- Open a pick's gallery page from this list, watch the preview, then choose Open in Backdrop.
- Click the wallpaper in Backdrop to download it and set it as your desktop. On macOS 26 or later it plays on the Lock Screen as well; on macOS 15 Sequoia, turn on Lock Screen support in Backdrop's Settings first. How to change your Mac Lock Screen walks through it.

For the full walkthrough, see how to set a video as your wallpaper on macOS.
Tip: Can't settle on one? Put a few favourites in a playlist and let Backdrop rotate them, so Monday is the café and Friday is the fireplace. Backdrop wallpaper playlists shows how.
Will a Live Wallpaper Slow Down Your Mac?
Not noticeably. When an app goes full screen, Backdrop pauses playback automatically, and it optimises further on battery power. The Backdrop page lists less than 0.3% CPU usage when running on a MacBook Pro (as of October 2026). If you study on a MacBook all day, a low-motion pick like Golden Hour at the Hobbit Hole or Quiet Fireplace Evening is the gentlest choice. The live wallpaper performance guide has the numbers.
