16 Winter Live Wallpapers for Mac: Snowfall, Cabins & Towns
The first proper cold morning is the best time to change your wallpaper. A winter live wallpaper puts real snowfall behind your windows, so the desk feels like the view from a cabin even when outside is just grey drizzle. Backdrop's public gallery has more than a hundred snowy scenes, and I picked 16: five forests and mountains, five towns and cabins (two of them dressed for Christmas), and six winter moments from games, anime and fantasy.
One thing first: Backdrop runs on Macs only, with macOS 15 Sequoia or later. The free trial has no time limit and lets you use up to three watermarked wallpapers, so you can try a forest, a village and an anime scene before you pay anything.
| Mood | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Quiet snowfall | Snowfall by Backdrop User | Snow drifts through misty pines in a 30-second 4K loop. Nothing else moves. |
| Christmas | Enchanted Christmas Village by Celine | A painted village square with a lit tree, carollers and falling snow. |
| Anime | Aozaki Aoko Snowbound Evening by muri | A girl in a scarf on a snowed-in country road at blue hour, in 4K and almost perfectly still. |
The pictures below are still frames; open a pick's heading to watch the loop on its gallery page. All 16 are community uploads, credited by the name the gallery shows. Snow mixed with rain lives in the rain live wallpapers roundup, and fireside rooms are in the cozy live wallpapers list.
Snowy Forests and Mountains
Real winter footage, mostly. These are the calmest picks in the post and the easiest to work in front of.
Snowfall

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. If you want one wallpaper that just says "it's snowing", this is it. Flakes drift down past a line of pines that disappears into fog, and the trees themselves stay still. The 30-second loop is long enough that you won't spot the repeat, and the soft grey sky keeps desktop icons readable. 4K.
Snowy Forest

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. One of the most popular winter pages in the gallery. You look down over a slope of deep teal pines with fog hanging over the top, and the snow is heavier here than in Snowfall. The colour is the draw: cold blue-green rather than grey. It's a 1080p source, so it suits a MacBook screen better than a large 4K display.
Silent Snowfall

Gallery credit: JM89. The dark version. A snowy path runs between black trunks into the forest, and a few big flakes float past the lens. It's moody without being spooky, and the bright path in the middle gives your eye somewhere to rest. 1080p, with a long 28-second loop.
Matterhorn

Gallery credit: Nick. The one mountain in the list, and it's the famous one. Clouds stream past the summit and slide across the snowfields in a time-lapse, so this pick moves more than the forests. The pale sky makes it a good match for light appearance. 4K.
Snowy Pond Sunrise

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. The only morning scene here. The sun breaks through snow-covered spruces and turns the sky and the water pink, while the reflections shimmer gently. Everything above the waterline is still, which makes it one of the calmest loops in the post. 4K.
Winter Towns, Cabins and Holiday Lights
Warm windows in the cold. The last two are the Christmas picks, for when December arrives.
Velaris in the snow

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. Velaris is the city from the A Court of Thorns and Roses books, imagined here as a mountain town glowing gold at the bottom of a snowy valley. Snow streaks across the whole frame through a one-minute loop. You don't need to know the books to like it: it's the best "lights in the valley" scene in this list. QHD.
Snowy Cabin

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A wooden hut buried in snow, frosted trees and a jagged blue mountain ridge, with flakes falling across the whole picture. It's the most saturated blue in the list and the one that looks most like a winter postcard. The 40-second loop is a 4K source.
Midnight Winter View With Cat

Gallery credit: Celine. Inside looking out. A round-eyed black cat sits on the window seat, the lamp is on, and snow falls past the streetlights outside. The snow does nearly all the moving, so it's an easy one to leave on all day. QHD.
Enchanted Christmas Village

Gallery credit: Celine. It looks like the lid of a vintage Christmas card. Lantern-lit houses ring a square with a decorated tree, people stroll through the snow, and the light is pure gold against the blue evening. The figures and the snowfall are what move. It's the most festive pick in the post. QHD.
House On Xmas

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. The neighbour who goes all out with the lights. A blue house strung with colour, two snowmen on the lawn, a rainbow tree and a vintage car under the snow. The lights twinkle and snow falls through a short loop. 4K.
Winter in Games, Anime and Fantasy
Characters and worlds you might know, plus two scenes that aren't from any franchise but fit right in.
Aozaki Aoko Snowbound Evening

Gallery credit: muri. Aoko from Witch on the Holy Night stands on a country road in deep snow, just as the streetlights come on. The background is so detailed it reads like a photo of rural Japan. It's also the stillest loop in the list, so it works well behind a full day of windows. 4K.
Frieren

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. Frieren from Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, wrapped in a scarf among a drift of sleeping snow rabbits. The whole picture drifts gently, giving it a soft sense of depth. It's the brightest and softest pick here, all whites and pale blues. 4K.
Link Winter Chillout

Gallery credit: Celine. Link takes a break by a frozen pond in a snowy village, with frost-white trees all around. The light shifts and the ice glints in a slow 41-second loop. It's one of the calmest picks in the post. QHD.
Witcher Winter Meditation

Gallery credit: Celine. Geralt kneels by a mountain lake, swords on his back, while the clouds roll by and the water moves. It has the crispest light in this section, with real blue sky and big white clouds. Pick it if you'd rather your winter looked bright than gloomy. QHD.
Snowlight Horizon

Gallery credit: Kun. A dreamy illustration: a small figure and a cat walk a snowy road toward the mountains under a lilac sky full of stars. Beams of light shimmer over the horizon. The pastel palette is unlike anything else in the post. 4K.
Temple Ruins in Winter

Gallery credit: Krenandr. A fantasy temple in near-monochrome: pagodas, stone lanterns and guardian statues under falling snow. The camera drifts slowly up the steps, so the whole scene moves a little. It's the most dramatic pick here, and it suits a dark-mode Mac. 4K.
How to Set a Winter Live Wallpaper on Your Mac
macOS can show photos, Apple's dynamic wallpapers and its aerial videos in Wallpaper settings, but it can't play a looping scene you pick yourself. Backdrop adds that, and each pick above opens directly in the app:
- Download Backdrop and open it.
- Open a pick's gallery page from this list, watch the preview, then choose Open in Backdrop.
- Click the wallpaper in Backdrop to download it and set it as your desktop. On macOS 26 or later it plays on the Lock Screen as well; on macOS 15 Sequoia, turn on Lock Screen support in Backdrop's Settings first. How to change your Mac Lock Screen walks through it.

For the full walkthrough, see how to set a video as your wallpaper on macOS.
Tip: Make a winter playlist. Put the forest, the cabin and the Christmas village in one and let Backdrop rotate them through the season. Backdrop wallpaper playlists shows how.
Will a Live Wallpaper Slow Down Your Mac?
Not noticeably. When an app goes full screen, Backdrop pauses playback automatically, and it optimises further on battery power. The Backdrop page lists less than 0.3% CPU usage when running on a MacBook Pro (as of November 2026). On a MacBook, the stillest picks, like Aozaki Aoko or Snowy Pond Sunrise, are the gentlest choice. The live wallpaper performance guide has the numbers.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Are these winter live wallpapers free on Mac?
Up to three are free to use, watermarked, for as long as you like. Removing the watermark and unlocking the whole gallery costs, as of November 2026, 1.99 a month, 14.99 a year or $29.99 once for a lifetime license (US prices).
How do I get falling snow on my Mac wallpaper?
Pick a snowfall scene, such as Snowfall or Snowy Forest, and open it in Backdrop. macOS Wallpaper settings can't play your own looping videos, so you need an app like Backdrop for snow that actually falls.
Is there a Christmas live wallpaper for Mac?
Yes. Enchanted Christmas Village and House On Xmas are in this list, and the gallery has more festive scenes if you search for Christmas.
Which winter wallpapers are 4K?
Snowfall, Matterhorn, Snowy Pond Sunrise, Snowy Cabin, House On Xmas, Aozaki Aoko, Frieren, Snowlight Horizon and Temple Ruins in Winter come from 3840 × 2160 sources. Velaris in the snow and Celine's scenes are QHD, and Snowy Forest and Silent Snowfall are 1080p.
Can I use these on Windows or my phone?
No. Backdrop is a Mac app, and these wallpapers open in it on macOS 15 Sequoia or later.
Start with Snowfall for the first cold week, then switch to the Christmas village when the lights go up outside.
