Lively Wallpaper for Mac? 3 Alternatives That Work
If you used Lively Wallpaper on Windows and want the same moving desktop on your Mac, there is no official Lively Wallpaper for Mac as of October 2026. For browsable video scenes, Backdrop is my pick. Aerial is the strongest free choice for scenic video and ambient controls; Plash is the free tool for putting a website on your desktop. Lively's Windows-specific wallpaper projects need a different route.

Lively's official project lists Windows downloads and describes a Windows-native app. It supports video and GIFs, webpages, and even application or game content on Windows. The maintainer has pointed Mac users to Plash for webpage wallpapers. That is a helpful clue: the right replacement depends on what you actually ran in Lively.
Pick the Mac app for your Lively wallpaper
| Feature | ✅ Backdrop | Aerial | Plash | Lively Wallpaper |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Browsing and making video wallpapers on Mac | Free scenic video, custom clips and overlays | Websites and interactive web pages | Windows video, web, shaders and apps |
| Mac requirement | macOS 15+ | Current 4.1.5: macOS 26+ | Current App Store build: macOS 26.4+ | No official Mac build |
| Price, October 2026 | Paid monthly, yearly or lifetime plans; unlimited-time 3-scene watermarked trial | Free; optional creator packs may have separate terms | Free | Free on Windows |
| Main limitation for switchers | No verified Lively package, shader or app/game import | Focused on video and ambient display, not interactive web scenes | One website on a chosen display; no video library or Lock Screen | Windows only |

Backdrop: browse a scene, then make it yours

Backdrop makes sense if Lively's appeal was finding a new moving scene, adding your own clip, and changing the mood of each display. Its Discover view groups community video wallpapers into Collections; the app also has a built-in editor, Library, playlists, and separate wallpaper choices per display. You can use video on your desktop and Lock Screen from macOS 15 onward. The current Backdrop release feed lists 2.7.2, released September 23, with macOS 15 as its minimum.
The free trial has no time limit, but up to three downloaded or custom-created scenes carry a watermark. The live store offers monthly, yearly, and lifetime plans; the amount and currency depend on your region. Community features require an iCloud account on the Mac. Cindori dates its founding to 2013, and Backdrop's release feed documents another update in September 2026. Lively's 1.0 release dates to 2020, and its official repository remains active.
Backdrop's Creator accepts custom video, so keep the original MP4 or MOV when moving Macs. For a Lively .zip package or an interactive application, game, or Shadertoy wallpaper, return to its original video or web source if one exists.
Aerial: the strongest free video option

Aerial is free and open source. Its current 4.1.5 release plays Apple's aerial footage as a live desktop, adds your own MOV or MP4 videos, and offers playlists, per-display controls, overlays, and pause rules. Its native Wallpaper Extension also brings playback into macOS Wallpaper settings. For someone who used Lively mainly to run beautiful footage, this is a real free answer, not a token alternative.
Aerial goes further for ambient overlays, and its screensaver can use live camera feeds. Aerial's current download requires macOS 26 or later. Its download page lists older builds for older systems, but says those builds are no longer maintained. See our Aerial vs Backdrop comparison for the detailed choice.
Plash: the free answer for web wallpapers

Developer's earlier Plash illustration. The current app and macOS interface may look different.
If your favorite Lively scene was a webpage, Plash is the closer match. It can display a remote or local website on the desktop, switch among saved sites, let you interact through Browsing Mode, and apply custom CSS or JavaScript. That is exactly why the Lively maintainer suggested it to a Mac user asking about a fluid web wallpaper.
Plash is free on the Mac App Store. The current App Store build requires macOS 26.4 or later; the developer provides older builds for older macOS releases. Plash shows one website on a chosen display rather than a different site on every monitor, and the developer says it cannot show that site on the Lock Screen. It is a web desktop utility, not a catalog of downloadable video scenes.
What carries over from Lively, and what does not?
Your own standard video file is the easiest thing to reuse: Backdrop supports custom video, while Aerial explicitly accepts MOV and MP4. A web page can be opened through Plash. Keep Lively project packages, Windows application wallpapers, Shadertoy setups, and Wallpaper Engine Workshop files with their original apps; use the underlying video or URL on Mac when one exists.
macOS also has built-in aerial wallpapers and screen savers. Apple's aerial wallpaper animates during locking and unlocking and can play as a screen saver. That may be enough if you just want motion at those moments. For video that keeps moving on your desktop while you work, choose a live wallpaper app.
Wallpaper Engine is a separate Windows product with no official Mac build. If you are switching from that app too, read our Wallpaper Engine for Mac guide or the Backdrop comparison. For a wider field of Mac apps, see the live wallpaper roundup.
Which one should you install?
Start with the content you already love. Choose Plash for a live website, Aerial for free scenic video and rich ambient controls, or Backdrop when you want to browse themed Collections and prepare your own clips. If you spent most of your time in Lively's shader or game wallpapers, keep those projects on Windows until you find a Mac tool that explicitly supports their formats.

Ready to Switch to the Best Mac Wallpaper App?
Backdrop offers native 4K video playback, custom lock screen animation, playlists, multi-display controls, and a community library built for macOS.
