Backdrop 2.8: 21 More Languages, Kinder to Your Battery

Backdrop 2.8 is out today, October 6. It's mostly about making Backdrop feel at home for more people: it now speaks your language, it can step aside when you're on battery, and Pause now keeps your place.
Now in 21 more languages
Backdrop now follows your macOS app language. Alongside English, it's available in 21 more languages: Arabic, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian Bokmål, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Ukrainian.
Kinder to your battery
- Pause on battery or in Low Power Mode. Turn on either option in Settings and your wallpaper rests while you're unplugged or saving power.
- Less power while your displays sleep. Wallpapers use less power while your displays are asleep, and resume reliably after waking.
Pause and Stop, now separate
Pause keeps your place, and Resume continues where you left off. Stop lives in the player's ⋯ menu and in the menu bar, and the next play starts from the beginning.
A better Discover
- Everyone gets the redesigned Discover. The classic layout option has been retired.
- A line about each featured wallpaper. Featured wallpapers in Discover now come with a short line about what makes each one special, and wallpaper detail pages show the wallpaper's description.
- Keyboard navigation. Use Tab to move between sections, Left and Right to select wallpapers, and Return or Space to open them. Focused items scroll into view on their own.
- Gentler with Reduce Motion. Featured wallpaper transitions use fades instead of large sideways movements when Reduce Motion is on.
- Browse layouts. Browse can switch between offset and aligned tile layouts from the toolbar again.
And with October here, there's a new Halloween collection to browse.
For creators
If a wallpaper you submit isn't accepted, you'll now see a note explaining why and, where possible, how to fix it. Editing tags also no longer removes unfinished words or commas as you type; tag requirements are checked when you publish.
Also improved and fixed
- Smoother transitions between wallpapers.
- If you choose a different wallpaper in System Settings while Backdrop is playing, Backdrop keeps your choice on the Lock Screen and no longer closes System Settings. Play a wallpaper or playlist in Backdrop to bring it back.
- Favorite hearts stay in sync wherever you add or remove a wallpaper.
- Playlists no longer accept duplicate copies of the same wallpaper, and existing duplicates are cleaned up.
- Replacing playlist artwork shows the new image right away.
If you already have Backdrop, choose Check for Updates in the app. If you're new, download Backdrop, the live wallpaper app for Mac and try it free.
