How to Uninstall Avast Security on Mac

To uninstall Avast on a Mac, open Avast Security, choose Avast Security > Uninstall Avast Security from the menu bar, then follow the uninstaller through Continue, Install Helper, and Finish. If the main app will not open, use Avast Security Uninstaller in the Applications folder. Do not drag the app to Trash, run the Windows-only Avast Clear tool, or delete protected extensions by hand.

That narrow route matters because antivirus software can install background and network components that a normal app-bundle deletion does not understand. Removing Avast also does not cancel a paid subscription or install replacement protection.

Quick Answer: Use Avast's Own Mac Uninstaller

1. Confirm whether you have Avast Security, Avast Premium Security, Avast One, or a managed business edition.
2. On a work or school Mac, check with the administrator before changing security software.
3. Open Avast Security and choose Avast Security > Uninstall Avast Security.
4. Click Continue, authenticate the Install Helper prompt, and complete any additional password prompt Avast shows.
5. Click Finish when the vendor uninstaller completes.
6. If Avast cannot open, run Applications > Avast Security Uninstaller instead.
7. Restart if Avast or macOS asks, then verify the app and its background activity separately.
8. Cancel billing, remove other Avast products, or choose replacement protection only through their own workflows.

Avast's current Mac FAQ still points users to this supported uninstall process. Its detailed uninstall page says moving Avast Security to Trash does not fully remove the application and recommends Avast's own remover.

Step 1: Identify the Avast Product and Who Manages It

The correct removal path depends on the product name and whether the Mac is managed. Open Avast and check the name shown in its menu and window. For Avast Security or Avast Premium Security, you can check the installed version under Menu > Preferences > General according to Avast's current Mac FAQ.

As of September 2026, Avast's system-requirements page calls the current Mac line Avast Premium Security 16.x and Avast Free Antivirus 16.x, while its Mac FAQ and interface guidance still use Avast Security. Follow the name shown by your installed app. Avast One and Avast Business products have separate support paths, so do not assume every Avast-branded app uses the same package or account controls.

Stop and contact the administrator when any of these apply:

• the Mac belongs to work or school;
• Avast is deployed again after you remove it;
• System Settings says a profile manages the extension or background item; or
• the installed name is Avast Business Antivirus or Avast Small Office Protection.

Avast's business removal guide includes product-specific administration and Terminal fallbacks. Those commands are not consumer cleanup shortcuts, and I would not run them on a personal Avast Security installation.

Step 2: Understand Why Dragging Avast to Trash Is Not Enough

Avast Security asks macOS for privileges beyond those of a simple document editor. Depending on the product and setup, its current permission guide covers real-time protection, a DNS proxy, Full Disk Access, certificates, Focus access, Location Services, and Local Network access.

This first-party Avast support image illustrates the point: the application coordinates with macOS security controls. The image is not an uninstall screen, and you should not reverse those controls manually as a substitute for the vendor remover.

Apple's Mac app removal guidance says to use a separate uninstaller when an app provides one. Avast does. Let that tool remove its own application, helper, and extension registrations in the order the vendor expects.

Tip: Do not disable System Integrity Protection or lower Apple silicon startup security to remove a normal consumer Avast installation. Those changes broaden the risk and are not part of Avast's supported consumer workflow.

Step 3: Run Uninstall Avast Security from the App Menu

For a working consumer installation, start inside Avast Security. Finish any active scan, then follow the current first-party sequence:

1. Open Avast Security.
2. In the macOS menu bar at the top of the screen, choose Avast Security.
3. Choose Uninstall Avast Security.
4. When Avast Security Uninstaller opens, click Continue.
5. Enter the password you use to sign in to the Mac, then click Install Helper.
6. Wait for the uninstaller to remove Avast.
7. If prompted again, enter the Mac password and click OK, following the wording shown by Avast's uninstaller.
8. Click Finish when removal is complete. The optional Continue button opens Avast's customer survey.

Avast Premium Security uses the same shape of workflow, with the paid product name in the menu. Follow the labels shown by your installed edition rather than renaming it mentally.

There is one currentness caveat worth stating plainly. Avast's FAQ was updated in September 2026 and still directs Mac users to this procedure, but the detailed uninstall page is tagged for Avast Security 15.x while the current Mac product line is 16.x. This guide therefore follows Avast's live textual workflow without treating older screenshots as proof of the present 16.x interface. Follow the labels shown by your installed edition, and contact Avast if they differ materially.

Step 4: Use Avast Security Uninstaller When the Main App Cannot Open

Avast also documents a Finder route to its separate uninstaller. Use this before reaching for Trash:

1. Open Finder.
2. Choose Go > Applications from the menu bar if Applications is not visible in the sidebar.
3. Open Avast Security Uninstaller.
4. Click Continue.
5. Authenticate Install Helper with the Mac administrator password.
6. Complete any additional password prompt shown by Avast's uninstaller.
7. Click Finish when the tool confirms removal.

If the uninstaller is missing, stop and contact Avast Support or the administrator of a managed Mac. Avast's current installation guide tells users who cannot complete its uninstall-and-reinstall sequence to contact support; it does not document a consumer repair command for restoring a missing uninstaller.

Do not fill the gap with avastclear.exe. Avast Clear is a Windows utility, and its Safe Mode or Command Prompt instructions do not apply to macOS.

Step 5: Escalate a Failed Uninstall Instead of Deleting Extensions

A failed privileged-app uninstall is a support problem, not a reason to delete broad Library paths. Restart the Mac once, reopen Avast Security Uninstaller, and record the exact error. If the same step fails again, use Avast Support or the organization administrator.

Avoid these risky shortcuts:

• deleting every file or folder whose name contains avast;
• removing all network or system extensions from System Settings;
• pasting commands written for Avast Business onto a consumer installation;
• disabling SIP or changing Startup Security Utility settings; or
• installing another security app while Avast's removal is incomplete.

Apple explains that system extensions run with specific privileges and may require interactive administrator approval or managed policy for removal. A broad deletion can leave a registration behind while removing the files needed for Avast's own cleanup.

Tip: Take a screenshot of the error dialog, not of account or license details. The exact component name and code are more useful to support than a folder full of manually deleted files.

Step 6: Verify the App, Background Activity, and Protection State

Verification should answer three different questions: is the app gone, are Avast components still active, and is the Mac protected by something else? Do not collapse them into one check.

1. Confirm Avast Security no longer appears in Applications.
2. Restart if the uninstaller or macOS requested it.
3. On macOS 27, open System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions and review Background App Activity for an Avast entry.
4. Check the extensions section only to identify a named Avast component. If one remains enabled after a successful uninstall and restart, contact Avast instead of deleting unrelated extensions.
5. Confirm any replacement security product through that vendor's status screen and current instructions.

Apple's current background-activity guide explains where macOS 27 shows apps that continue running after you quit them. That setting is a useful observation point. Turning off one switch is not equivalent to uninstalling Avast, and it does not prove a network or security extension has been removed.

If Avast reappears after restart, check for organization management or an automated deployment. Repeating the personal-Mac workflow will not override a device-management policy.

Step 7: Keep Billing, Accounts, and Other Avast Apps Separate

Uninstalling Avast Security changes the Mac installation; it does not cancel every Avast service. Review only the separate decision that matches your goal:

• Paid subscription: Avast says direct purchases use the Avast Account subscription controls. Cancel renewal before the next billing date if you do not want another charge.
• App Store purchase: Use the store's subscription workflow; Avast Account cannot cancel an App Store subscription.
• Free Avast Security: There may be no paid renewal, but confirm the actual account and receipt rather than assuming.
• Avast SecureLine VPN, Cleanup Premium, AntiTrack, or Secure Browser: These are separate applications. Removing Avast Security does not prove that they are gone.
• Avast account: App removal does not delete the account.
• Replacement protection: Removing Avast also removes its malware protection. Choose and verify a replacement separately if your policy or risk model requires one.

Avast's current subscription cancellation guide documents the direct-account flow and the store boundary. Keep billing work out of the uninstall itself so a reversible app change does not become an accidental account decision.

Review Storage Only After Avast's Uninstaller Finishes

Once Avast's own removal reports success, a storage review can help you inspect large local files without pretending they are security components. Sensei's Large Files view can surface installers and other sizeable items for deliberate review.

Let Avast's own remover handle the app and its privileged components. Use Uninstall Avast Security or Avast Security Uninstaller, authenticate the prompts it shows, and verify the result after a restart. If that tool cannot finish, preserve the exact error and take it to Avast or the Mac's administrator instead of tearing out components by hand.
