15 Samurai and Katana Live Wallpapers for Mac: Ronin to Cyber Blades
A samurai wallpaper only really works when something moves: leaves blowing past a lone warrior, a blade catching the light as it's drawn, an ink crow breaking apart in the wind. I went through the samurai and sword scenes in Backdrop's public gallery and kept 15, in three groups: classic samurai and ronin, anime and game swordfighters, and dragon, demon and cyber blades.
One note before you start scrolling: Backdrop runs only on Macs, with macOS 15 Sequoia or later. The free trial has no end date and covers up to three wallpapers with a watermark, so you can try a duel, an ink painting and an anime blade before paying anything.
| If you want… | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A classic ink painting | Samurai Ink | A warrior in armor while a crow dissolves into ink beside him. |
| An epic duel | Sunset Samurai Blade Duel | Two swordsmen face off in front of a huge glowing sun. 4K. |
| An anime katana | Monochrome Katana | A black-and-white anime girl drawing her blade, with a glint along the steel. 4K. |
The images below are single frames, so click a pick's name to see it move on its gallery page. Members of the Backdrop community posted every scene here, and the credit under each one is the name the gallery shows. Franchises with their own roundups, like Jujutsu Kaisen, stay there.
Classic Samurai and Ronin Live Wallpapers
Armor, straw hats, falling leaves and a single blade. These are the scenes people picture when they search for a samurai wallpaper, and most of them keep the motion slow.
Samurai Ink

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A samurai stands still while a crow pulls away from him and breaks into a trail of ink. Only the ink and a soft beam of light move, over a full one-minute loop. The samurai stands on the right, so this one looks best with a tidy desktop.
Sunset Samurai Blade Duel

Gallery credit: Kun. Two swordsmen square up in the grass under a sun that fills half the sky. One blade glows orange, the haze drifts and the grass sways. It's the most cinematic scene in this group, and it's 4K.
Red Samurai

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A single figure in a straw hat stands on a rock under a blood-red sky while a few leaves blow past. The sky barely moves, so this is one of the calmest picks here, and the dark lower half keeps the Dock area readable. 4K.
Meditating Samurai

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A samurai sits in the grass with his swords laid beside him, looking out at Mount Fuji while cherry blossom petals drift down. It's the only daylight scene in the list and the most peaceful. The source is 3852 × 2152, just short of 4K.
Samurai Under Maple

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. The whole scene is black and white except the maple, which glows red above a samurai with his sword raised. Leaves pour down across the left side and scatter over the ground. Busier than the others in this group, but the color contrast is hard to beat. 4K.
Tsushima

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A samurai with a drawn katana looks across a red field at an army gathered in front of a castle. Red leaves drift through the frame and the rest holds still. The gallery tags it Ghost of Tsushima, and it's 4K.
Anime and Game Swordfighter Live Wallpapers
These are character scenes from anime and games, plus a couple of original anime ones. Expect more motion here: blades flash, hair flies and a few of them move across the whole screen.
Monochrome Katana

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. An anime girl draws her katana across her face in stark black and white, and a glint runs along the steel. The solid black left third makes the blade stand out even more. 4K.
Koi Fish Sachiro

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A white-haired boy holds up a sword whose blade is made of water, with koi swimming through it and around him. It's the most unusual idea here and the brightest scene, with motion over most of the screen. 1440p.
Yamada Asaemon Sagiri

Gallery credit: revvy. Sagiri from Hell's Paradise holds her katana level across a dark, empty frame. The movement is light, mostly her hair and a few sparks, so this one stays calm behind your work. 4K.
Levi Ackerman

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. Levi stands on the ruins with a blade in his hand and his cape moving in the wind. Pale sky fills most of the frame, so it's a good pick if you'd rather have a light desktop. 4K.
Sekiro Shadows Die Twice

Gallery credit: muri. A lone shinobi stands on a twisted red branch while the shadow of a giant owl spreads its wings in the mist above. It's painted rather than rendered, and the mist drifts slowly. A favorite of mine for its colors alone. 4K.
Dragon, Demon and Cyber Blade Live Wallpapers
Spirits, masks and future armor. These scenes take the sword into fantasy, and two of them are among the busiest wallpapers in the list.
Moonlit Blade of the White Dragon

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A white dragon spirit curls around a girl with a katana, all in glowing pinks and purples. Almost everything moves, from the dragon to the flames, so treat this one as a showpiece. 4K.
Saya

Gallery credit: revvy. Saya from Arcaea holds a crystal sword in front of her face in a pale, dreamlike landscape. Light glints and shards drift through the whole scene. It's the softest-colored pick in this group. 4K.
Endless Space Hissho

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A samurai in red armor with a glowing visor stands on the right while light and smoke rush past behind him. The Hissho are a warrior faction from the strategy game Endless Space 2. Lots of background motion here, with smoke and light filling the left half. 1080p.
Demon Samurai

Gallery credit: XynoCrest. A warrior in an oni mask looks up, framed like a woodblock print with a decorative border. His hair flows while the rest stays put. It's the most graphic scene here and works well if you like clean lines. 4K.
How to Set a Samurai Live Wallpaper on Your Mac
macOS can show photos and Apple's own aerial videos in Wallpaper settings, but it can't loop a samurai scene you choose. Backdrop does, and every pick above opens straight in the app:
- Download Backdrop and open it on your Mac. Sign in to iCloud on the Mac to use the community gallery.
- Go to a pick's gallery page, watch the preview, and choose Open in Backdrop.
- Click the wallpaper in Backdrop to download it and set it on your desktop. On macOS 26 or later it also plays on the Lock Screen; on macOS 15 Sequoia, switch on Lock Screen support in Backdrop's Settings first. How to change your Mac Lock Screen has the steps.
Once you're in the app, Backdrop's Discover view groups the gallery into Collections, so you can keep browsing by mood.

The full walkthrough is in how to set a video as your wallpaper on macOS, and the gallery's anime category has more sword scenes to browse.
Tip: Make a samurai playlist. Add an ink scene, a duel and an anime blade, and Backdrop rotates them on a timer or shuffles them, with a separate playlist per display if you have two screens. See Backdrop wallpaper playlists.
Will a Live Wallpaper Slow Down Your Mac?
Not noticeably. Cindori's published figure, as of November 2026, is "Less than 0.3% CPU usage when running on a MacBook Pro". On top of that, Backdrop pauses the wallpaper while an app is full screen and uses less energy on battery power. If you mostly want a quiet screen, Red Samurai, Meditating Samurai and Levi Ackerman barely move. The live wallpaper performance guide goes deeper.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is there a Ghost of Tsushima live wallpaper for Mac?
Yes. Tsushima and Red Samurai in this list are both tagged Ghost of Tsushima in the gallery: a straw-hatted samurai over a red field, and a lone figure under a red sky. Both play through Backdrop.
Which samurai wallpaper is best for a work desktop?
Pick one with little motion and a calm right side, where macOS puts desktop icons. Red Samurai and Meditating Samurai keep the subject near the middle with little movement around it, and Levi Ackerman is mostly pale, quiet sky.
Are these samurai wallpapers in 4K?
Eleven of the 15 are 4K or larger. Meditating Samurai is just under 4K, Koi Fish Sachiro is 1440p, and Samurai Ink and Endless Space Hissho are 1080p.
Are samurai live wallpapers free on Mac?
You can use up to three for free with a watermark, with no time limit. As of November 2026, removing the watermark and unlocking the full gallery costs 1.99 a month, 14.99 a year or $29.99 once for a lifetime license (US prices).
Do these work on Windows or my phone?
No. The gallery pages open in any browser, but the wallpapers play through Backdrop, which only runs on Macs with macOS 15 or newer.
If you only try three, make it Samurai Ink, Sunset Samurai Blade Duel and Monochrome Katana: one ink painting, one duel and one anime blade.
