15 Retro & Pixel Art Live Wallpapers for Mac: Synthwave to Y2K
If your idea of a good desktop is a pixel-art waterfall, a neon sun sinking into a grid, or a glossy blue screen straight out of 2007, a still image only gets you halfway. In a retro live wallpaper the water actually falls, the sun shimmers on the waves and the fish swim past your icons. I went through the pixel art, synthwave and Y2K scenes in Backdrop's public gallery and kept 15, in three groups: pixel art scenes, synthwave and outrun, and Y2K and Frutiger Aero nostalgia.
A quick note if you came here from a Windows PC: Backdrop runs only on Macs, with macOS 15 Sequoia or later. The free trial has no end date and covers up to three wallpapers with a watermark, so you can try a pixel scene, a sunset and an aquarium before paying anything.
| If you want… | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Cozy pixel art | Pokémon Emerald Waterfall | A trainer resting on a forest boardwalk while a waterfall runs below. |
| A synthwave sunset | Retro Sun | A huge orange sun over a dark ocean, with the waves doing the moving. 4K. |
| Early-2000s nostalgia | Windows XP Cat | The famous green hill and blue sky, plus a cat eating snacks. |
The images below are single frames, so click a pick's name to see it move on its gallery page. Each scene was posted by a member of the Backdrop community, and the credit under each one is the name the gallery shows. Pixel city skylines already live in the city and cyberpunk roundup, so you won't find them twice.
Pixel Art Live Wallpapers
Pixel art is often drawn at a small size and scaled up, so many of these come in at 1080p. That matters less than you'd think: hard pixel edges hold up when they're enlarged, so a 1080p pixel scene looks much better on a Retina display than a 1080p photo would.
Pokémon Emerald Waterfall

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A trainer and her Pokémon rest on a boardwalk deep in a dark green forest, with a bike parked beside them. The waterfall and a few shafts of light do the moving, in a short four-second loop, so the rest of the screen stays calm.
Undertale Home Fireplace

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. Toriel reads in her armchair by the fire while two kids sit at her feet, all in warm orange tones. The fire flickers for a full minute before the loop starts again. If you played Undertale, this one needs no explanation.
Hornet and Hollow Knight

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. Hornet and the Knight rest on a small floating island in the dark, lit by blue lanterns and drifting butterflies. The black around the island keeps your desktop icons easy to read, and the movement is gentle. It's also one of the 4K pixel scenes.
The Witcher

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. Geralt sits by a campfire on a hill, looking out over a valley under a pink and gold sunset. The fire does most of the moving. It's the scene I'd pick for a cozy evening of work, and it's in 4K too.
Koi Pond

Gallery credit: V4G4X. A top-down pond with koi gliding between lily pads. No game, no characters, just fish, which makes it the easiest pick here to live with all day. The fish swim mostly on the left, so the right side stays quieter for icons.
Sea Of Stars Onlook

Gallery credit: champkid. Three adventurers stand on a cliff in the world of Sea of Stars, looking out over a hazy sea dotted with rocky islands. Light movement runs across the whole frame, so it feels alive without one busy spot.
Synthwave and Outrun Live Wallpapers
Big suns, neon grids and endless roads. These are the scenes for anyone who'd happily have an 80s soundtrack playing all day.
Retro Sun

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A huge orange sun sits on the horizon of a dark ocean. The sky stays still and the waves roll underneath, over a loop of more than a minute and a half. It's the calmest synthwave pick and a natural first choice.
Synthwave Canyon

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. You fly forward through a glowing wireframe canyon toward a red sun with scan lines across it. This is the most motion in the synthwave group, with the canyon walls rushing past on both sides. Great when you want energy, less so behind a long document.
Retro Sunset

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A pink half-sun sits on dark water between two neon blue palm trees, with lots of empty dark space around it. Most of the movement is the reflection on the water. It's the minimal pick of the bunch.
Cosmic Drive

Gallery credit: Iker. Cars cruise down a highway toward a giant ringed planet, past fields of glowing purple crystals. The road and the scenery around it move, and the loop runs well over two minutes, so you won't spot the restart. It's 4K and the most detailed scene in this group.
Y2K and Frutiger Aero Live Wallpapers
Frutiger Aero is the glossy look of mid-2000s tech: bright blue skies, bubbles, water, glass and green fields. Three of these are inspired by the Windows desktops of that era; the other two capture the same style without the Windows references.
Windows XP Cat

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. The rolling green hill and blue sky everyone remembers from early-2000s PCs, with one addition: a cat on the right, busy eating snacks. The cat does nearly all the moving, and it still makes me laugh.
Aquarium

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. Dozens of tropical fish swim through clear blue water with light from above. This is the busiest scene in the whole list, with fish crossing every part of the screen, so think of it as a screensaver-style treat rather than a work background. It's 4K.
Windows Bloom

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. Thin light lines drift over a soft blue background around a small orange flower icon, a nod to late-2000s desktops. The motion is slow and spread out, and the loop is long. Calm enough to work in front of all day.
Windows Aero Glass

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. An empty glass window, complete with a red close button, floats over ribbons of blue and green light that flow across the whole screen. It's pure 2007 in one image.
Y2K Aqua

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A cracked globe pours water, a fish tank floats in the sky, bubbles drift past and a city reflects in the water below. It's the strangest scene here and the most Frutiger Aero of them all, with a loop over two minutes long.
How to Set a Retro Live Wallpaper on Your Mac
macOS can show photos and Apple's own aerial videos in Wallpaper settings, but it can't loop a pixel-art scene you choose. Backdrop does, and every pick above opens straight in the app:
- Download Backdrop and open it on your Mac. Sign in to iCloud on the Mac to use the community gallery.
- Go to a pick's gallery page, watch the preview, and choose Open in Backdrop.
- Click the wallpaper in Backdrop to download it and set it on your desktop. On macOS 26 or later it also plays on the Lock Screen; on macOS 15 Sequoia, switch on Lock Screen support in Backdrop's Settings first. How to change your Mac Lock Screen has the steps.
Once you're in the app, Backdrop's Discover view groups the gallery into Collections, so you can keep browsing by mood.

The full walkthrough is in how to set a video as your wallpaper on macOS, and the gallery's gaming category has more pixel scenes to browse.
Tip: Make a retro playlist. Add a pixel scene, a sunset and an aquarium, and Backdrop rotates them on a timer or shuffles them, with a separate playlist per display if you have two screens. See Backdrop wallpaper playlists.
Will a Live Wallpaper Slow Down Your Mac?
Not in a way you'll notice day to day. Backdrop pauses the wallpaper while an app is full screen and uses less energy on battery power. Cindori's published figure, as of November 2026, is "Less than 0.3% CPU usage when running on a MacBook Pro". If you'd rather keep the desktop calm while you work, Hornet and Hollow Knight, Undertale Home Fireplace and Windows XP Cat barely move. The live wallpaper performance guide goes deeper.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can I get the Windows XP hill wallpaper on my Mac?
Yes, as a live wallpaper inspired by it. Windows XP Cat shows the green hill and blue sky with a snacking cat, and it plays on your Mac desktop through Backdrop.
What is a Frutiger Aero wallpaper?
Frutiger Aero is the glossy look of mid-2000s tech: blue skies, water, bubbles, glass and bright green nature. Aquarium, Windows Aero Glass and Y2K Aqua in this list are good examples.
Does pixel art look blurry on a Retina Mac?
Not usually. Pixel art is made of hard-edged blocks, so it holds up far better than a photo when it's scaled up from 1080p. Hornet and Hollow Knight and The Witcher are 4K if you'd rather start from a larger file.
Are these retro live wallpapers free on Mac?
You can use up to three for free with a watermark, with no time limit. As of November 2026, removing the watermark and unlocking the full gallery costs 1.99 a month, 14.99 a year or $29.99 once for a lifetime license (US prices).
Do these work on Windows or my phone?
No. The gallery pages open in any browser, but the wallpapers play through Backdrop, which only runs on Macs with macOS 15 or newer.
If you only try three, make it Pokémon Emerald Waterfall, Retro Sun and Windows XP Cat: one pixel scene, one sunset and one blast from the past.
