15 Cyberpunk & City Live Wallpapers for Mac: Neon to NYC
Some desktops want a forest. Mine, most evenings, wants a city: towers lit up, signs flickering, traffic moving somewhere far below. A cyberpunk live wallpaper gives your Mac that late-night energy without getting in the way of the work. Backdrop's public gallery has more than 200 city, neon and cyberpunk scenes, so I went through them and kept 15: five neon megacities, six real skylines at night, and four synthwave and pixel-art cities.
Quick heads-up if you found these on your phone or a Windows PC: Backdrop is a Mac app and needs macOS 15 Sequoia or later. You can try it free for as long as you like with up to three watermarked wallpapers, enough to put Night City, Manhattan and a synthwave drive side by side and see which one sticks.
| Mood | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Cyberpunk | Night City by Backdrop User | A wide neon skyline in 4K where only the lights move. |
| Real skyline | New York City Skyline by Backdrop User | Manhattan across the East River at night, calm and in 4K. |
| Synthwave | Retro Drive by Backdrop User | A sunset highway between pink towers, in 4K. |
The pictures below are still frames; open a pick's heading to watch the loop on its gallery page. All 15 are community uploads, credited by the name the gallery shows. Rain-soaked streets have their own list in the rain live wallpapers roundup, and neon tunnels live in the abstract roundup.
Neon and Cyberpunk Cities
Holographic ads, flying cars and towers that disappear into the haze. These are the scenes people mean when they search for a cyberpunk wallpaper.
Night City

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. If you played Cyberpunk 2077, you'll know this skyline. The camera stays locked while billboards cycle and tower lights flicker, so it reads like a photo that's quietly alive. The source is extra wide at 5070 × 2160, which helps on an ultrawide monitor, and the dark sky up top keeps the menu bar easy to read.
Cyberpunk City

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. This one puts you down in the streets instead of above them. A chunky tower block with walkways and glowing shop signs fills the frame, and flying cars slip past underneath. The warm pink haze makes it softer than most cyberpunk scenes. 4K.
Citadel District

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A miniature megacity seen from above, with no sky and no horizon, just rooftops and neon in every direction. The view doesn't move; the signs pulse. It's the busiest-looking image here but one of the calmest to sit in front of. 4K.
Neon Car

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. The most cinematic pick in the list. A flying car cruises over a violet city, then climbs into pink clouds before the loop brings you back down. It's two minutes long and moves the whole time, so save it for a second display or for when you're not reading. 4K.
Cyberpunk Morning

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. Not every cyberpunk scene has to be midnight. Someone sits by a floor-to-ceiling window while an amber city wakes up outside and holograms drift past. The room is dark at the bottom, which keeps your Dock clean. 4K.
Real Skylines at Night
Real cities, filmed at night. These suit you if you want something grounded rather than science fiction.
New York City Skyline

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. One of the most-searched city pages in the gallery, and it's easy to see why. Midtown glows across the river with the Empire State Building on the left, and the half of the frame above the skyline stays dark. Barely anything moves, which makes it my pick for a work Mac. 4K.
Above NYC

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. The same city from a drone, hanging over Midtown and looking straight down the avenues. It drifts slowly between the towers over a loop of more than a minute and a half, so it feels like flying rather than watching. Cool blue tones, in 4K.
Shanghai

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. The Bund view of Pudong, with the Oriental Pearl Tower glowing cyan and every colour of the skyline spilling across the river. Only the water moves, in a short loop. It's the most colourful real city here. 4K.
Tokyo Twilight Aerials

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A slow flight over central Tokyo toward the glowing orange Tokyo Tower, with lights packed all the way to the horizon. It moves more than the other skylines, but smoothly. If you want the Tokyo night feeling without a rainy street, start here. 4K.
Saigon Night

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. The riverside of Ho Chi Minh City from above, warm gold lights along the water and a lit boat drifting past. The drone pans slowly over a loop of more than a minute. It's a 1080p source, so it looks best on a MacBook rather than a big 4K monitor.
Cityscape

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. Lower Manhattan again, but dreamier: One World Trade Center and its neighbours tinted purple and pink, mirrored in perfectly still water under a crescent moon. Soft beams of light rise and fade behind the towers. It's a 1080p source, so it suits a MacBook screen best.
Synthwave and Retro-Future Cities
Sunsets that never end, neon grids and pixel art. The eighties' idea of the future, still looking good on a modern Mac.
Glitch City

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A fly-through down a neon road between wireframe towers, with light trails racing ahead. It's the fastest loop here and the most retro, like the opening of an eighties arcade game. Great on a second screen; a lot on your main one. HD source.
Retro Drive

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. You're riding behind a car on a city highway, buildings and streetlights sliding by, with a giant orange sun in a pink sky and a smaller second sun burning above it. The movement is steady, like watching from a passenger seat, and the loop runs over a minute. My favourite synthwave pick. 4K.
Pixel Cityscape
Gallery credit: Proxy. Soft pink and teal pixel art, with a train crossing the middle of the frame and windows blinking on. It's the gentlest pick in the post, and bright enough to suit a light-mode desktop. 4K.
Pixel Art Night City
Gallery credit: Backdrop User. The night-time pixel version: office towers, an elevated railway and billboards that change their ads every few seconds. Small lights blink on and off across the long loop. It looks like a still from a cyberpunk adventure game, in the best way. 4K.
How to Set a City Live Wallpaper on Your Mac
macOS can show photos, Apple's dynamic wallpapers and its aerial videos in Wallpaper settings, but it can't play a looping scene you pick yourself. Backdrop adds that, and each pick above opens directly in the app:
- Download Backdrop and open it.
- Open a pick's gallery page from this list, watch the preview, then choose Open in Backdrop.
- Click the wallpaper in Backdrop to download it and set it as your desktop. On macOS 26 or later it plays on the Lock Screen as well; on macOS 15 Sequoia, turn on Lock Screen support in Backdrop's Settings first. How to change your Mac Lock Screen walks through it.

For the full walkthrough, see how to set a video as your wallpaper on macOS.
Tip: Running two displays? Put Night City on the main screen and Neon Car on the second. Backdrop can play a different wallpaper on each; different live wallpapers on multiple displays shows how.
Will a Live Wallpaper Slow Down Your Mac?
Not noticeably, even with Neon Car flying around behind your windows. Backdrop lists less than 0.3% CPU usage when running on a MacBook Pro (as of October 2026), pauses playback automatically whenever an app goes full screen, and optimises further on battery power. If you're on battery all day, the near-still picks, New York City Skyline and Citadel District, are the gentlest choice. The live wallpaper performance guide has the numbers.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Are these cyberpunk live wallpapers free on Mac?
You can use up to three of them free, with a watermark and no time limit. To drop the watermark and open the whole gallery, Backdrop costs, as of October 2026, 1.99 a month, 14.99 a year or $29.99 once for a lifetime license (US prices).
Is there a Cyberpunk 2077 Night City live wallpaper for Mac?
Yes. Night City, the first pick in this list, shows the game's skyline in 4K, and the gaming live wallpapers roundup has more game scenes.
Which city wallpapers are 4K?
Twelve of the 15 come from 4K sources, and Night City is wider still at 5070 × 2160. Saigon Night and Cityscape are 1080p, and Glitch City is 2048 × 1152.
Can I use a city live wallpaper on my Lock Screen?
Yes. Backdrop plays the same wallpaper on the Lock Screen on macOS 26 and on macOS 15 Sequoia once Lock Screen support is turned on in its Settings.
Start with the New York skyline for the working day, then switch to Night City once the work's done.
