16 Dark Live Wallpapers for Mac: Black Silk, Gothic & Moody Anime
If your Mac lives in Dark Mode, a bright beach photo behind your windows feels wrong, especially at 11 p.m. A dark live wallpaper fixes that: the desktop stays low-light, the menu bar and Dock sit on black instead of fighting a sunny sky, and something still moves slowly in the background. I went through Backdrop's public gallery and picked 16: four near-black loops, four gothic and dark fantasy scenes, four from games and four moody anime pieces.
Backdrop is a Mac app (macOS 15 Sequoia or later), so these won't open on Windows or a phone. Its trial never expires and covers up to three watermarked wallpapers: enough to test a black loop, a castle and an anime piece side by side before paying.
| Mood | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Minimal | Black Silk Waves by Backdrop User | Black fabric ripples in a 42-second 4K loop. No subject, just slow light on silk. |
| Gothic | Dark Gothic Castle by Excrusation | A black-and-white cathedral over a field of red flowers, almost completely still. |
| Anime | Bocchi After Dark by Cupcake | Bocchi in front of a glowing red magic circle, in 4K. |
Each image below is a single frame, so click a pick's heading to see it move on its gallery page. Every pick is a community upload, credited with the name shown in the gallery. Dark fantasy kings and abyss scenes live in the fantasy live wallpapers roundup, and neon night streets are in the city and cyberpunk list.
Dark and Minimal Loops
No characters, almost no colour. These are the easiest picks to work in front of, because your icons and windows always win.
Black Silk Waves

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. Black silk ripples across the entire screen and the grey highlights slide along each fold, so the whole picture moves, but slowly. The 42-second loop hides the repeat well. 4K.
Monochrome Topographic Map

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. Thin white contour lines on pure black, slowly reshaping themselves as if the terrain underneath were breathing. It looks like a technical drawing, which makes it a good fit for a work Mac. The loop runs a full 50 seconds. 4K.
Sisyphus in Ink

Gallery credit: L00P. The darkest pick in the post. A small hand-drawn square sits in the middle of a black screen, and inside it Sisyphus keeps pushing his boulder up the hill. Everything outside the frame is black, so it's ideal if you keep icons on the desktop. The loop is 105 seconds long. 4K.
Dark Water

Gallery credit: sori. Open sea at night, with no horizon and no sky. The whole surface rolls and catches faint silver light, so this one moves more than the other minimal picks. It's deep blue rather than black, which suits a blue accent colour. 4K.
Gothic and Dark Fantasy
Castles, knights and vampires. Dramatic, but all of them keep the light low.
Dark Gothic Castle

Gallery credit: Excrusation. A black cathedral rises out of a grey sky, and the only colour is the field of red flowers in front of it. A few petals and specks of light drift across the flowers; the rest stays still. It's the strongest single image in this list. 4K.
Glitch Knight

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A stone knight in blue fog, with a band of digital glitch flickering across the visor. The glitch is the only movement, so the scene feels calm until you look straight at it. It's a wide 4096 × 1728 source, which suits an ultrawide display.
Berserk Armor

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. Guts from Berserk, crouched in the black armor with smoke drifting behind him. It's so dark that the armor almost disappears into the background, which is the point. If you want a Dark Mode desktop with a character on it, this is the most restrained choice. 4K.
Alucard Hellsing

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. Alucard from Hellsing raises his gloved hand, with the seal on his palm and a red eye peering between his fingers. Dozens of eyes float in the dark around him and shimmer as the loop plays. It's the eeriest pick in the post. 4K.
Dark Scenes From Games
Emblems and worlds you'll recognise if you've played them, all with mostly black screens.
Warcraft Horde

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. The Horde emblem from World of Warcraft, glowing red-hot on a dark wall while embers drift past. The emblem sits in the middle with plenty of dark space on both sides. It's a 1080p source, so it suits a MacBook screen better than a large 4K display.
FFVII Sephiroth and Cloud

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A grainy black-and-white portrait of Sephiroth beside the Final Fantasy logo, with smoke drifting behind. The portrait flickers and blurs like an old film reel while a light streak runs under the logo. It looks like a game's title screen. 4K.
Dark Souls 3 Kiln of the First Flame

Gallery credit: CJSXS02. The final area of Dark Souls 3: a plain of grey ash, ruined towers and a black sun ringed in red. Ash drifts through the air while the landscape stays put. It's the brightest pick in this section, but still muted. 1080p.
The Hollow Knight

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. The little Knight faces the chained Hollow Knight in a dark arena with a dim orange glow at the edges. The chains sway slightly and the scene breathes, but the big shapes stay still. Most of the screen is near-black. 4K.
Moody Anime
Black-and-white manga panels and close-ups. These suit a dark desktop because they're mostly black space with one strong focal point.
Death Note

Gallery credit: Backdrop User. A wide-eyed Death Note grin in stark black and white. The camera creeps in slowly over a short loop, so the face feels like it's leaning toward you. 1080p.
Monochrome Eyes

Gallery credit: Rev. A single strip of manga eyes floats in the middle of a black screen, with a line of Japanese text underneath. The caption glitches and the panel flickers slightly; the rest of the screen stays black. Like Sisyphus in Ink, it leaves the whole desktop free for icons. 4K.
Green Eyes

Gallery credit: revvy. A close-up of a character with glowing green eyes, half hidden behind a dark scarf. Light catches the hair and the face drifts slightly through the loop. It's the most colourful anime pick, but the frame is still mostly shadow. 4K.
Bocchi After Dark

Gallery credit: Cupcake. Bocchi from Bocchi the Rock, drawn in pale greys, stands in front of a red magic circle while specks of light drift past. The circle glows and the figure sways a little. If you know the show, the mood is a funny contrast with the character. 4K.
How to Set a Dark Live Wallpaper on Your Mac
Start with the system setting. Open System Settings, click Appearance and choose Dark, or Auto to switch with your Night Shift schedule (Apple Support). macOS can show photos and Apple's own wallpapers, but it can't play a looping scene you pick yourself. Backdrop adds that, and each pick above opens directly in the app:
- Download Backdrop and open it.
- Open a pick's gallery page from this list, watch the preview, then choose Open in Backdrop.
- Click the wallpaper in Backdrop to download it and set it as your desktop. On macOS 26 or later it plays on the Lock Screen as well; on macOS 15 Sequoia, turn on Lock Screen support in Backdrop's Settings first. How to change your Mac Lock Screen walks through it.

For the full walkthrough, see how to set a video as your wallpaper on macOS.
Tip: Make a night playlist. Put Black Silk Waves, Dark Gothic Castle and one anime pick in a playlist and let Backdrop rotate them. Backdrop wallpaper playlists shows how.
Will a Live Wallpaper Slow Down Your Mac?
Not in a way you'll notice. Backdrop pauses playback automatically whenever an app goes full screen and does further optimisation on battery power, and its product page lists less than 0.3% CPU usage when running on a MacBook Pro (as of November 2026). If motion distracts you while you work, the stillest picks here are Dark Gothic Castle and Glitch Knight. The live wallpaper performance guide has the numbers.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Are these dark live wallpapers free on Mac?
Up to three are free to use, watermarked, for as long as you like. Removing the watermark and unlocking the whole gallery costs, as of November 2026, 1.99 a month, 14.99 a year or $29.99 once for a lifetime license (US prices).
How do I get a dark aesthetic live wallpaper on my Mac?
Turn on Dark Mode in System Settings › Appearance, then pick a dark scene such as Black Silk Waves and open it in Backdrop. macOS Wallpaper settings can't play your own looping videos, so you need an app like Backdrop for a wallpaper that moves.
Which dark wallpapers work best with desktop icons?
Sisyphus in Ink and Monochrome Eyes keep everything in a small panel in the middle and leave the rest of the screen black, so icons stay readable anywhere. Black Silk Waves and Dark Water are also low-contrast enough for a busy desktop.
Which dark wallpapers are 4K?
All but four come from 3840 × 2160 sources. Warcraft Horde, Dark Souls 3 Kiln of the First Flame and Death Note are 1080p, and Glitch Knight is a wide 4096 × 1728 source.
Is there a pure black live wallpaper for Mac?
Close to it. Sisyphus in Ink and Monochrome Eyes are almost entirely black, with one small animated panel in the middle. Black Silk Waves fills the screen but stays in blacks and greys.
Start with Black Silk Waves for everyday work, and switch to Dark Gothic Castle when you want the desktop to look like a book cover.
