Wallspace vs Backdrop in 2026: Which Fits Your Mac?

Wallspace vs Backdrop in 2026: choose Backdrop for discovering and making Mac wallpapers, or Wallspace for a free start and lower one-time Pro price on Mac.

You want a moving Mac wallpaper, but a pretty loop is only half the decision: will you browse for new scenes, make your own, or just set one and get back to work? In Wallspace vs Backdrop, I would choose Backdrop for most people who want to keep discovering and making wallpapers. Its Collections, filters, editor, and per-display playlists form a useful daily workflow. Choose Wallspace by Tangent Labs LLP if a free starting point and a lower one-time price matter more. Both are native Mac apps that can play your own MP4 files.

Where Wallspace Makes Sense

Wallspace feels direct from the interface Tangent Labs shows: a large featured wallpaper, a strip of previews, then Home, Explore and Library. Its getting-started guide describes browsing, previewing and pressing Apply. The current homepage advertises AI search, a curated library of more than 1,000 wallpapers, separate scenes for different displays, and your own MP4 imports.

The price is its clearest advantage. Wallspace has a free tier, and [Pro currently costs 12.99 once](https://wallspace.app/pricing) for one Mac. Backdrop's US-dollar lifetime reference price is 29.99. Wallspace also offers a Homebrew formula for people who manage apps that way. Tangent Labs says the app needs no login or ads; its privacy policy also discloses anonymous usage analytics.

Wallspace is not limited to choosing one clip and forgetting it. Its v1.4 notes describe playlists that change wallpapers automatically and better per-screen controls; earlier notes document community uploads. For a simple rotation, those features may be enough.

Where Backdrop Pulls Ahead

Backdrop makes more sense when choosing a wallpaper becomes an ongoing hobby. Its current Discover view gathers scenes into Collections—Reading Rooms, Neon Drive and other moods—while filters help narrow thousands of community uploads by color, resolution and motion. Backdrop's visual Collections suit exploratory browsing; Wallspace's AI search suits someone who can describe the scene they want.

Backdrop also handles the step after you find that your own clip is almost right. Its built-in editor lets you trim video, set output quality, save it to your Library, and optionally publish it to the community. Wallspace's current guides describe MP4 import and community uploads. Backdrop documents the extra preparation controls inside the same app.

For a two-monitor desk, both apps can show different scenes on each screen. Backdrop adds a playlist assignment for each display, with its own shuffle and skip timing. Wallspace's changelog confirms per-screen wallpapers and auto-changing playlists. Its published notes do not describe independent playlist timing per display. If you rotate wallpapers through the workday, those controls are a practical reason to choose Backdrop.

Lock Screen Support Depends on Your macOS Version

Both apps require macOS 15 or later for their desktop wallpaper features. But Wallspace's current FAQ says its animated Lock Screen needs macOS 26 or later. Backdrop supports animated Lock Screen wallpapers on every version it currently supports, starting with macOS 15 Sequoia. That matters if your Mac cannot or will not move to macOS 26 yet.

In Backdrop, enable its Lock Screen setting and choose the wallpaper in macOS System Settings › Wallpaper. macOS can also play that selected video as the screen saver when the Mac is idle. There is no separate Backdrop screen-saver mode to buy or configure.

Price, Privacy and the People Behind the Apps

At the listed US-dollar reference prices, Wallspace costs less for one Mac: 0 to start, or 12.99 for Pro. Backdrop gives you an untimed trial with three watermarked wallpapers, then monthly, annual and lifetime choices. Backdrop's higher lifetime price includes its documented editor, community workflow, curated discovery, and independent per-display playlist assignment and timing. Pay for those controls if they fit your routine.

Neither app asks for a separate username just to run it. Backdrop's community requires an iCloud account on the Mac; Wallspace advertises no login. Cindori's published privacy policy discloses crash reports and limited app-action context, while Wallspace's policy discloses anonymous app analytics through TelemetryDeck. That is the more useful distinction than either homepage's privacy slogan.

For a lifetime purchase, I also look at what each developer has actually shipped. Cindori says it has 15 years of Mac-app experience, including Sensei and Trim Enabler, and Backdrop's release feed lists version 2.7.2 on September 23, 2026. Tangent Labs LLP launched Wallspace in January 2026, its changelog lists v1.4 in March, and its studio site now lists Dockspace beta too. Both provide contact channels.

Which One Should You Choose?

I would pick Backdrop if I wanted to keep exploring new scenes, refine my own clips, or coordinate wallpapers across screens. Its Lock Screen path also works on macOS 15. Start with the untimed trial and see whether the editor and discovery tools become part of your routine.

Choose Wallspace if you want a moving wallpaper with minimal setup, prefer its search or visual style, or want the free option and the lower one-time Pro price. Its current playlists and uploads make it more capable than a basic single-scene player.
