Wallper vs Backdrop in 2026: 5 Differences That Matter

Wallper vs Backdrop: Backdrop is our pick for Lock Screen video on Sequoia, curated Collections, a trial that never ends, and 15 years of Mac app updates.

You've narrowed it down to two paid live wallpaper apps, both native to macOS and both with about 3,000 wallpapers to pick from. For most Mac users weighing Wallper vs Backdrop, Backdrop is the pick: it animates your Lock Screen and screen saver from macOS 15 Sequoia, its trial never runs out, its curated Collections make the catalog a pleasure to explore, and it comes from a studio that has made Mac apps for 15 years.

Here are the five differences that decide it, as of September 2026.

I built this comparison from both developers' current product pages, pricing, help docs and release notes, checked on September 29, 2026.

1. Lock Screen and Screen Saver: Backdrop Starts on Sequoia

If you're on Sequoia, this is the biggest practical difference. Wallper's Lock Screen guide says its Lock Screen video needs macOS 26 or later. On macOS 14 and 15, you get a live desktop and a still frame everywhere else.

Backdrop has supported the Lock Screen since version 2.0 in September 2025, and it covers every macOS version Backdrop runs on, starting with macOS 15 Sequoia. Turn on Enable Lock Screen in Backdrop's settings, and your wallpapers show up in System Settings › Wallpaper next to Apple's own.

Here's the part I like most. Once it's set up, macOS plays that wallpaper on the Lock Screen and as the screen saver when your Mac sits idle, and Backdrop doesn't even need to be running. You can change the idle timing in System Settings › Lock Screen, same as with Apple's aerials.

For more ways to personalize it, see how to change your Mac Lock Screen.

2. The Free Trial: No Clock on Backdrop

Wallper's trial gives you every Pro feature for seven days. After that, the app locks until you buy.

Backdrop's trial has no time limit. You can use up to three wallpapers, from the community or made in the editor, with a small watermark. That's enough to live with it on your desktop and Lock Screen for as long as you need to decide. Buying removes the watermark and unlocks the full library.

3. Discovery: Backdrop Curates Collections

Backdrop's community gallery lists 3,032 wallpapers, ahead of Wallper's 2,900+. The bigger difference is how you find the one you want.

Backdrop Discover view with curated Collections including Reading Rooms, Reclaimed Worlds, Neon Drive and Cosmic Voyagers

Backdrop's 2.7 redesign added curated Collections: themed sets like "Reading Rooms", "Neon Drive" and "Cosmic Voyagers" that make browsing feel like flipping through an art book. Underneath, you can filter by category, format, resolution, color and motion level, from calm, slow scenes to dynamic ones. Browsing, downloading and sharing use the iCloud account already on your Mac, so there's no separate sign-up to deal with. It needs a regular, unrestricted iCloud account, and wallpapers you make yourself work without one.

Wallper Explore view with a search field, popular tags such as 4K and Ultrawide, and category filters

Wallper's Explore view organizes its catalog by category and format tags such as 4K, 21:9 and 32:9, with search on top.

4. Price: Start Free, Then Pay Your Way

Backdrop lets you decide how to pay. Start on the trial, which never expires. When you're hooked, pick a plan: 1.99 a month, 14.99 a year, or $29.99 once for Lifetime. Every plan unlocks the full app, and a license covers up to three Macs.

Wallper only sells one-time licenses: 14.99 for three Macs or 24.99 for five, due as soon as the seven-day trial runs out. There's no monthly option, so you're paying up front after a week.

If you know you'll keep it, Lifetime is the one I'd pick. You pay once, every future Backdrop update is included, and it comes from a studio that has kept its Mac apps updated for 15 years. If you'd rather not commit yet, $1.99 a month gets you the full app, and you can cancel whenever you like.

5. Who Makes It: 15 Years of Mac Apps

Backdrop is made by Cindori, which has been building Mac apps for 15 years, including Sensei and Trim Enabler. Backdrop gets the same care: version 1.0 shipped in December 2024, it has been updated every month since February 2026 (six releases this September alone, up to 2.7.2 on September 23), and every plan comes with a support center and direct developer support.

Wallper comes from Sandimax LLC, an independent team whose lineup also includes the Copier clipboard manager and the Calendarly iPhone app. Wallper 1.0 shipped in June 2025, and support runs through email (replies in one to two business days), Discord and GitHub issues.

If you're buying a lifetime license, that history is part of what you're paying for: a studio that keeps shipping and supporting its apps as macOS changes.

More to Love: The Editor, Displays and Playlists

Backdrop has a full wallpaper editor built in.

Backdrop editor with a video preview, source and target details, a quality slider, and a Publish Backdrop toggle with category and tags

Backdrop's built-in editor shows the source and output details, lets you trim and mute, and has a quality slider with the estimated file size before you commit. Keep the result private in your Library, or flip Publish Backdrop, pick a category and tags, and submit it to the community from the same window. The Backdrop editor guide walks through it step by step.

Wallper My Media view listing local and liked wallpapers with an Add Video button

In Wallper, you add a clip through My Media → Add Video, and sharing it sends you to a web upload portal. Wallper's file-format help page lists MP4 as the only supported container.

On a multi-display setup, Backdrop lets you assign a playlist to each monitor, each with its own shuffle and skip timer, and it pauses behind full-screen apps and on battery. Wallper also sets a wallpaper per display, and its playlists follow the clock instead: day and night, or light and dark mode.

Tip: Whichever app you choose, short HEVC loops at your display's resolution look just as good as giant source files and are much easier on a laptop battery.

Which One Should You Choose?

My pick is Backdrop. You can try it for as long as you like, it puts motion on your Lock Screen and screen saver from Sequoia onward, its curated Collections make the catalog a joy to browse, and it's backed by a developer with 15 years of Mac apps behind it.

Wallper makes sense if you specifically want music-reactive wallpapers, the lowest one-time price, or you're still on macOS Sonoma.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is Wallper free?

Not after the first week. Wallper's 7-day trial unlocks every Pro feature, then the app locks until you buy Pro for 14.99 or Pro+ for 24.99. Its online gallery is free to browse.

Is Wallper safe to download?

Wallper is notarized by Apple and sold as a direct download from wallper.app, not through the Mac App Store, so get it from the official site. Backdrop is also a direct download, from cindori.com.

Where do I find my Wallper license key?

Wallper shows the key right after purchase and emails it to the address you used at checkout. Backdrop works the same way: the key arrives by email, and you enter it under Settings › License in the app.

Which uses less CPU, Wallper or Backdrop?

Both are light on Apple silicon. Wallper's 1.12 release notes put it at "a few percent" of CPU on a 5K display. Cindori measured Backdrop at about 3% of one core on a 10-core M1 Max, or 0.3% of the whole chip. Both figures are as of September 2026.

Does Wallper work on the Lock Screen on macOS Sequoia?

No. Wallper's live Lock Screen and screen saver playback requires macOS 26 or later; on macOS 14 and 15 it uses a still frame there. Backdrop plays live wallpapers on the Lock Screen and as the screen saver from macOS 15 onward.
