How to Uninstall Zoom on Mac Safely
To uninstall Zoom on a Mac, open Zoom Workplace, choose Zoom Workplace > Uninstall Zoom Workplace from the menu bar, then select OK. Before you do that, check where computer recordings are stored and leave Zoom's Keychain entries alone unless you understand the encryption warning. Removing the app does not delete your Zoom account, cancel a subscription, or erase cloud recordings.
If Zoom will not open, use Finder to run the ZoomUninstaller bundled inside the application. Zoom documents that recovery path for failed uninstalls, and the current 7.1.5 Mac package still contains it. Moving Zoom Workplace.app to Trash is a narrower last resort when neither vendor route can run.
Quick Answer: Remove the App Without Removing Your Data
- Finish or convert any recording that is still processing.
- In Zoom, open Settings > Recording and note the Local recording storage path.
- Back up any computer recordings you want to keep.
- Choose Zoom Workplace > Uninstall Zoom Workplace in the macOS menu bar.
- Select OK to remove the desktop app and its components.
- If the app cannot open, use Finder to run its bundled ZoomUninstaller.
- Do not delete
Zoom SafeKeychain entries as routine cleanup. - Reinstall from Zoom's Download Center if you were fixing a damaged client, then verify your recordings and account separately.
Zoom's current uninstall instructions use that exact macOS menu path. They do not tell Mac users to run the Windows-only CleanZoom utility or paste a blanket deletion command into Terminal.
Step 1: Protect Computer Recordings Before Removing Zoom
Computer recordings are ordinary files on your Mac, not part of the Zoom Workplace application bundle. They should survive a normal uninstall, but you should still locate and back them up before changing the app that created them.
In the current Zoom Workplace app:
- Select your profile picture.
- Open Settings.
- Select Recording.
- Under Local recording storage, note the path or select Open.
Zoom's computer-recording guide says the default Mac location is:
/Users/[Username]/Documents/ZoomYour configured location may be different. Copy wanted recordings to a verified backup location, especially if you plan to delete local settings or troubleshoot an incomplete recording.
Computer and cloud recordings are separate. Computer recordings live on the Mac; cloud recordings are managed through Zoom's web portal. Removing the desktop app does not delete either category automatically.
Tip: If a recording still shows as unconverted, finish that conversion before uninstalling. A copied
.zoomworking file is not the same thing as a finished video you have verified can play.
Step 2: Quit Meetings and Close Zoom Completely
Leave active meetings and let any recording conversion finish before quitting. Then press Command-Q in Zoom Workplace or choose Quit Zoom Workplace from the app menu.

If macOS says the app is still in use, check the Dock and Activity Monitor for the specific Zoom Workplace process. Quit that process or restart the Mac. Do not terminate every helper whose name contains “Zoom”; Zoom Rooms, a VDI client, or an administrator-managed component may be a separate product.
On a work or school Mac, stop if Zoom is managed or automatically redeployed. Your administrator may need to remove the package or profile through the organization's management system.
Step 3: Use Zoom Workplace's Built-In Uninstaller
Zoom's menu command is the supported normal uninstall route on macOS. Open the app one last time and follow these steps:
- At the top of the screen, choose Zoom Workplace in the macOS menu bar.
- Choose Uninstall Zoom Workplace.
- Select OK when asked to confirm removal of the desktop app and its components.
- Wait for the uninstall to finish before emptying Trash or downloading a replacement.
The wording matters. Zoom renamed the client to Zoom Workplace, so older instructions that say zoom.us > Uninstall Zoom may not match the current interface. Follow the labels shown by your installed build and compare them with Zoom's current support article.
I would stop here for a normal uninstall. The built-in route removes the client without turning the job into a hunt through every Zoom-named folder in your Library.
Step 4: Run the Bundled Uninstaller When Zoom Cannot Open
A damaged client can still contain Zoom's vendor uninstaller even when the main app will not open. Zoom's current error-code guidance provides this fallback, and an inspection of the official Zoom Workplace 7.1.5 Mac package on September 11, 2026 confirmed the same bundled application at Contents/Frameworks/ZoomUninstaller.app.
If Zoom cannot launch far enough to show its menu, try the vendor fallback first:
- Quit any remaining Zoom Workplace process.
- Open Finder > Applications.
- Control-click Zoom Workplace and choose Show Package Contents.
- Open Contents > Frameworks.
- Double-click ZoomUninstaller and wait for it to finish.
- Restart the Mac.
- Reinstall a fresh copy from Zoom's Download Center if your goal is repair.
If ZoomUninstaller is absent or will not run, Apple's current Mac app removal guide permits moving the application bundle to Trash. Treat that as app-bundle removal, not proof that every component is gone, and contact Zoom Support when a managed installation or damaged helper remains.
Do not compensate by deleting every file returned by a search for “zoom.” That can catch recordings, unrelated downloads, the Zoom Outlook add-in, Zoom Rooms, VDI software, or organization-managed files.
Tip: Reinstalling over a damaged app is sometimes enough, but Zoom's own support flow pairs uninstall with a fresh Download Center installer. Use the current official installer, not an old package from Downloads.
Step 5: Treat Keychain Cleanup as a High-Risk Optional Step
Do not remove Zoom Keychain entries merely to make the uninstall feel complete. Zoom documents a separate clean-uninstall option that searches Keychain Access for entries beginning with Zoom Safe, but it attaches a serious warning.
Those entries can include cryptographic keys needed to decrypt end-to-end encrypted Zoom Mail messages and Zoom Phone voicemails protected with Advanced Encryption. Zoom says removing them can cause likely permanent loss of access unless you have a backup key with sufficient access or account escrow enabled.
For an ordinary uninstall or reinstall, keep the Keychain entries. Consider Zoom's Keychain procedure only when all of these are true:
- you specifically need to remove locally saved Zoom settings and keys;
- you understand which encrypted Zoom Mail or Zoom Phone data depends on them;
- you have verified the required backup-key or escrow path with your Zoom administrator; and
- Zoom's current support instructions still direct you to the same entries.
I would not turn that warning into a casual checkbox. If you are unsure whether the account uses those encrypted products, use the standard uninstall and leave Keychain alone.
Step 6: Keep Outlook, Accounts, and Subscriptions Separate
Removing Zoom Workplace changes the Mac app; it does not settle every Zoom integration or service. Check each of these only if it is part of your goal:
- Zoom for Outlook add-in: Zoom describes this as an Office AppSource integration, separate from the desktop client. Manage it through Outlook or your Microsoft 365 administrator.
- Legacy Outlook plugin: Zoom distinguishes the installed legacy plugin from the add-in and recommends the add-in for Mac. Do not assume an AppSource add-in disappeared because the Zoom desktop app was removed.
- Zoom account: Uninstalling the app does not delete the account. Zoom's account-termination flow is a separate web-portal action for eligible Basic account owners.
- Paid plan: Uninstalling does not cancel billing. Direct Zoom purchases normally use the web billing portal; App Store purchases follow Apple's subscription controls.
- Cloud recordings: These remain in Zoom's cloud and follow the account's storage and retention rules, not the state of the Mac app.
That separation is useful when the goal is a clean reinstall. You can remove and reinstall the client without making an irreversible account or billing decision at the same time.
Step 7: Verify the Removal or Fresh Install
Verify the exact outcome you wanted instead of searching for the word “Zoom” across the whole disk. For a removal:
- Confirm Zoom Workplace.app is no longer in Applications.
- Check that Zoom no longer opens at login if you intended to remove the desktop client.
- Confirm the computer recordings you preserved still exist and play.
- Leave cloud recordings, account data, and subscription status unchanged unless you deliberately edited them elsewhere.
For a clean reinstall, download the current Mac installer from Zoom, open Zoom Workplace, and confirm that you can sign in, join a test meeting, and see the expected microphone and camera permissions. Use the recording settings to confirm the storage path before making a new recording.
If the app returns after removal, check whether it is managed or automatically deployed. Repeating the Finder step will not override an administrator's software policy.
Review Large Local Files After the Supported Uninstall
Once Zoom's own removal path is finished, a storage review can help you find intentional files that the uninstaller should not delete. Sensei's Large Files Finder can surface large recordings and other files for your review without pretending they are disposable leftovers.

As of September 2026, Sensei 2.1.2 requires macOS 14 or later. It cannot verify Zoom cloud retention, decrypt protected messages, cancel a subscription, or decide whether a meeting recording should be deleted.
Use size as a clue, not a verdict. Open each recording or folder, verify its purpose and backup, and remove it only when you no longer need it.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Does uninstalling Zoom delete my recordings?
A normal app uninstall does not delete computer recordings saved elsewhere or cloud recordings in the Zoom web portal. Locate the configured computer-recording folder and back up wanted files first.
Can I uninstall Zoom when the app will not open?
Yes. In Finder, show Zoom Workplace's package contents, open Contents > Frameworks, and run ZoomUninstaller. Zoom documents that vendor fallback for failed uninstalls; moving the app bundle to Trash is the narrower last resort.
Should I delete Zoom Safe entries from Keychain Access?
Not for a routine uninstall. Zoom warns that deleting those cryptographic keys can permanently remove access to certain encrypted Zoom Mail messages and Zoom Phone voicemails without an adequate backup key or account escrow.
Does uninstalling Zoom cancel my subscription?
No. Billing is separate. Direct Zoom purchases normally use the Zoom web billing portal, while subscriptions purchased through Apple's App Store use Apple's cancellation process.
Does removing Zoom Workplace also remove Zoom for Outlook?
Do not assume it removes the current Outlook add-in. Zoom distinguishes the Office AppSource add-in from the legacy installed plugin. Review the integration in Outlook or your organization's Microsoft 365 administration.
Can Sensei fully uninstall Zoom instead?
Zoom's own uninstall command is the first choice because the vendor knows its components and encryption warnings. Sensei is useful afterward for reviewing large local files, but it cannot manage Zoom cloud data, billing, or encryption keys.
Remove the Client, Not Everything Connected to It
A safe Zoom uninstall is narrow: preserve computer recordings, use Zoom Workplace > Uninstall Zoom Workplace, and leave Keychain entries alone unless you have a verified reason and recovery path. If the main app is broken, Finder can expose Zoom's bundled uninstaller before you fall back to removing only the application bundle.
Keep account deletion, billing, cloud recordings, and Outlook integrations as separate decisions. After the vendor workflow is complete, Sensei can help you review large local files without treating every Zoom-related item as safe to erase.
