How to Uninstall OneDrive on Mac and Keep Your Files

To uninstall OneDrive on a Mac and keep your files, check which files have finished syncing and which exist only online. Download and back up anything you need offline, use Unlink this Mac in OneDrive's Account preferences, then move OneDrive.app from Applications to Trash. Leave the OneDrive folder alone until you have checked it separately. Uninstalling the app does not cancel a Microsoft 365 subscription or erase your cloud account.

The trap is Finder: a OneDrive filename can be visible even when its contents are not stored on the Mac. If you need those contents after unlinking, make an independent copy before you remove the sync app.

Quick answer: choose what to keep before removing the app

1. Open OneDrive from the menu bar and let uploads finish. Check important recent files in OneDrive on the web or your organization's OneDrive site.
2. In Finder, inspect the files you need offline. Use Always Keep on This Device where available, wait for downloads, and test the files. Make a copy outside the OneDrive folder if you want a separate local backup.
3. Open the OneDrive menu-bar cloud icon, choose Help & Settings > Preferences > Account > Unlink this Mac. Microsoft documents this Mac-specific path.
4. Quit OneDrive if it is still running. In Finder's Applications folder, move OneDrive.app to Trash.
5. Check the web copy and your independent local backup. Decide whether the remaining local OneDrive folder is useful; do not delete it as part of the app-uninstall step.

If you only want a break from syncing or fewer local folders, see Microsoft's stop-or-pause options before uninstalling. If this is a work or school Mac, check its management policy with IT first.

Step 1: confirm that the cloud has the files you expect

Finish the sync question before you touch the app. Open the menu-bar OneDrive window and look for uploads, errors, or paused syncing. Then sign in to the same account on the web and open a few important recent files. OneDrive's Mac sync troubleshooting guide treats unlinking as a temporary disconnection when repairing sync; it does not say an unresolved upload is safe to ignore.

I would be especially cautious with a document edited today, a shared work folder, or a file that another app saves into OneDrive automatically. If it is absent on the web or still reports a sync error, resolve that issue while the client remains installed. A browser check proves the selected cloud files are present; it does not replace a backup of the files you need offline.

Tip: Note whether you signed in with a personal account, a work or school account, or both. The OneDrive menu can expose separate account settings, and checking the wrong web account gives false reassurance.

Step 2: turn online-only placeholders into usable local copies

A cloud badge in Finder means you should not assume the file is downloaded. Microsoft's Files On-Demand guide for Mac distinguishes online-only items from locally available and always-available ones. On File Provider installations, the OneDrive folders appear under Finder's Locations; the folder name and exact icons can vary with the account and macOS version.

This is Microsoft's File Provider orientation image, not a live view of your account or proof of a particular 2026 OneDrive build. Inspect the actual status of each important file on your Mac.

For files you need after uninstalling, right-click them while OneDrive is still connected and choose Always Keep on This Device if that command appears. Wait for download activity to stop, then open a sample without relying on a filename alone. Microsoft notes that an always-kept item can still show a cloud badge in some File Provider states, so opening the file is a better check than interpreting one symbol in isolation.

If you want files that are independent of OneDrive, copy the downloaded items into a folder outside the OneDrive sync location, then open them from there. Copy, rather than move, when your aim is to keep the cloud originals: Microsoft says moving files outside a connected OneDrive folder removes them from OneDrive. For irreplaceable data, keep a second backup as well.

Tip: Avoid deleting a connected OneDrive folder to reclaim space. Microsoft says deleting an online-only item in that folder deletes it from OneDrive online and other synced devices. Free Up Space is the distinct action for keeping the cloud file while releasing its local contents.

Step 3: unlink this Mac, then remove OneDrive.app

Unlinking ends this Mac's sync connection; moving the app to Trash removes the client. Microsoft lists these as separate choices in its OneDrive removal guide:

1. Click the OneDrive cloud icon in the menu bar and open Help & Settings.
2. Choose Preferences, then the Account tab.
3. Choose Unlink this Mac for the account you intend to disconnect and follow the confirmation. Repeat only for another account you deliberately want to unlink.
4. Quit OneDrive if its menu-bar app is still open.
5. Open Finder, choose Applications, and move OneDrive.app to Trash. Select the app, not the OneDrive file folder.

Microsoft's Mac reinstall instructions confirm the app-to-Trash step. Apple's Mac app removal guidance says to use a vendor uninstaller when one exists; Microsoft's current OneDrive Mac guidance specifies moving the app to Trash. There is no reason here to run a broad Terminal deletion command or remove Office application containers.

If OneDrive reappears, cannot be unlinked, or is installed through a managed work setup, stop and ask your administrator. Microsoft documents Mac sync-app deployment and policy controls; repeatedly deleting a managed app does not resolve those controls.

Step 4: inspect the remaining folder without deleting cloud files

The app and the files are different things. Microsoft says web files remain after unlinking. Files already available on the device may remain in the local OneDrive folder; online-only files will need the web account. Do not promise yourself that every visible Finder item is a full local copy.

After the app is gone, verify your outside-the-sync-folder backup opens. Check the same essential items on the web. You can leave the remaining OneDrive folder in place until you know exactly what it contains. If your goal is disk space, inspect the specific downloaded files and other large local items rather than selecting a whole sync root by name. File Provider uses macOS-managed locations and cache behavior, so a pasted ~/Library/CloudStorage deletion command is a poor substitute for checking the real folder.

I would also keep account closure and billing off this cleanup checklist. Removing the Mac client does not close a Microsoft account, remove Office apps, or cancel a Microsoft subscription. Those choices have their own controls and consequences.

Review storage after OneDrive is safely disconnected
