How to Uninstall Microsoft Office on Mac Safely

Uninstall Microsoft Office on Mac without losing Outlook data, confusing OneDrive with Office, or assuming that removing the apps cancels Microsoft 365.

To uninstall Microsoft Office on a Mac, quit the suite, open Finder > Applications, select the Microsoft apps you want to remove, and move them to Trash. That removes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote without deleting documents stored elsewhere. Stop before deleting Microsoft container folders, though: Microsoft warns that its deeper cleanup steps can remove Outlook data.

If you only want to reinstall a broken Office app, removing the applications is usually the sensible first pass. A full profile reset is a different job, and I would not combine it with subscription cancellation or OneDrive cleanup.

Quick Answer: Choose the Removal Depth First

  1. Save open work and confirm that important documents exist outside the application bundles.
  2. Decide whether you need an app-only removal or a destructive profile reset.
  3. Protect Outlook material that may exist only on this Mac.
  4. Quit Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote.
  5. In Finder, move only the Microsoft 365 apps you want to remove to Trash.
  6. Delete Microsoft containers only if you deliberately want to reset local Office data and have a verified backup.
  7. Remove stale Dock shortcuts and restart the Mac.
  8. Verify the apps, documents, Outlook data, OneDrive, licensing, and billing.

Microsoft’s current Office for Mac uninstall guide continues from deleting the applications into removing named Library containers, cleaning up Dock shortcuts, and restarting. Microsoft does not label the Library stage optional. This guide draws a safety distinction inside that sequence: stop after app removal if you want to preserve local Office profile data, and continue into the Library only when you deliberately want that data removed.

Step 1: Decide What You Actually Want to Remove

An app-only uninstall and a full Office-data reset are not the same operation. Write down the outcome before opening Trash.

Current Microsoft Word for Mac interface from Microsoft’s Mac App Store listing

This Microsoft-supplied image shows Word for Mac, one of the application bundles in the Microsoft 365 suite. Removing that bundle does not automatically erase .docx files saved in Documents, iCloud Drive, OneDrive, or another folder. Apple’s current Mac app removal guidance makes the same boundary clear: deleting an app does not remove documents created with it, although you may need a compatible app to open them afterward.

Tip: If you are troubleshooting only Word, start with Word. Selecting every Microsoft app turns a narrow reinstall into a suite-wide change without making the diagnosis more reliable.

Before removing anything, open an Office app and record its version from Word > About Microsoft Word (or the equivalent app menu). Also note where updates arrive. A copy installed from the Mac App Store updates through the App Store; Microsoft’s direct installer is serviced through Microsoft AutoUpdate. That channel matters at reinstall time: Microsoft’s Mac App Store activation guidance says App Store builds require a Microsoft 365 subscription, while a compatible one-time Office license uses Microsoft’s direct download.

Step 2: Protect Outlook Data Before Touching Containers

Treat Outlook as the data-loss boundary. Mail synchronized with Microsoft 365, Outlook.com, Exchange, Gmail, or another server may download again after sign-in, but local-only folders, POP mail, drafts, rules, signatures, and other profile material need their own backup plan.

Before uninstalling:

  1. Open Outlook and let connected accounts finish synchronizing.
  2. Check for On My Computer folders and any POP account that may hold mail locally.
  3. Save attachments or messages that exist only on the Mac.
  4. Use your organization’s supported backup or migration route for work data.
  5. Verify the backup outside any Microsoft container you might delete.

Microsoft’s Outlook import and export hub links to .olm archive guidance, but its .olm export feature is documented for Legacy Outlook for Mac. Do not assume every current Outlook profile can create the same complete archive. If Tools > Export is absent, stop and confirm the correct path for your Outlook experience and account type instead of treating server sync as a backup.

Tip: A backup is not verified because a copy command finished. Open the destination, confirm the expected file size and date, and make sure it is outside ~/Library/Containers and ~/Library/Group Containers.

Step 3: Quit Every Office App

Close active documents, finish syncing, and quit each Microsoft app before removal. Use Command-Q in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote, or choose Quit from each app’s menu.

Also check the Dock for a dot beneath an Office icon. If Finder says an app is in use, reopen it and quit normally. A restart is safer than force-quitting a list of vaguely Microsoft-named background processes.

On a work or school Mac, stop if the suite is managed or automatically redeployed. Your administrator may need to remove Microsoft 365 through the organization’s device-management system, and manual deletion will not override that policy.

Step 4: Move the Microsoft 365 Apps to Trash

Microsoft’s normal Mac procedure removes the application bundles in Finder. Open Finder > Applications, then select the apps that are actually in scope:

  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Microsoft Outlook
  • Microsoft OneNote

Hold Command while clicking to select several apps, Control-click the selection, and choose Move to Trash. Enter an administrator name and password if macOS asks.

Do not add OneDrive, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Edge, Remote Desktop, or Microsoft AutoUpdate merely because they share the vendor name. Each has its own purpose and removal consequences. Remove one only when it is part of your stated goal and you have checked its current vendor instructions.

I would keep the apps in Trash until the first verification pass is complete. That preserves a simple Put Back route if you selected the wrong bundle, but it does not protect Outlook data stored elsewhere.

Step 5: Understand Microsoft’s Library Cleanup Before Continuing

Microsoft’s full uninstall sequence continues into ~/Library; this guide recommends stopping after the application step unless you specifically intend to clear local Office data. The current Microsoft page names these items under Containers:

Microsoft Error Reporting
Microsoft Excel
com.microsoft.netlib.shipassertprocess
com.microsoft.Office365ServiceV2
Microsoft Outlook
Microsoft PowerPoint
com.microsoft.RMS-XPCService
Microsoft Word
Microsoft OneNote

It then names these three folders under Group Containers:

UBF8T346G9.ms
UBF8T346G9.Office
UBF8T346G9.OfficeOsfWebHost

Microsoft specifically warns that moving those three Group Containers to Trash removes Outlook data and says to back it up first. The listed Library items can also hold suite preferences, identities, templates, activation-related state, and shared Office data. Deleting them is the destructive local-data part of Microsoft’s procedure, not a harmless way to reclaim a few megabytes.

If a Microsoft support case or a confirmed profile-reset plan requires this layer:

  1. Recheck the live Microsoft uninstall page in case the folder list changed.
  2. Verify the Outlook backup or supported migration route.
  3. In Finder, press Command-Shift-G, enter ~/Library, and select Go.
  4. Review only the Microsoft-named items documented for the current procedure.
  5. Move the exact intended folders to Trash; do not delete the entire Containers or Group Containers directory.
  6. Keep Trash intact until Outlook and the remaining Office apps are verified.

Do not paste a recursive Terminal command from an old checklist. A wildcard cannot tell the difference between disposable cache, a local mailbox, a template, a license record, or another Microsoft product.

Step 6: Remove Dock Shortcuts and Restart

A Dock icon is a shortcut, not proof that the app is still installed. Control-click each removed Office icon in the Dock, choose Options, then Remove from Dock.

Restart the Mac. Microsoft includes that restart in its current uninstall sequence, and it gives background components a clean boundary before you verify removal or reinstall the suite.

If an Office icon remains in Spotlight after restart, wait for indexing and check its actual path before deleting anything else. It may point to Trash, a second Applications folder in your home directory, or another mounted disk.

Step 7: Verify Apps, Files, and Outlook Separately

Verification should match the removal depth you chose. Check each outcome rather than searching the whole disk for “Microsoft.”

  1. Confirm the selected Office apps no longer appear in /Applications or your home Applications folder.
  2. Open a representative Word, Excel, or PowerPoint document with another compatible app, or confirm that the file is still present for later reinstall.
  3. If Outlook was kept, open it and verify its accounts and local material before emptying Trash.
  4. If Outlook was removed for reinstall, confirm the backup or server data before restoring the app.
  5. Leave OneDrive’s sync folder alone unless you are following a OneDrive workflow.
  6. Reinstall from the channel that matches your license. Use the Mac App Store for a Microsoft 365 subscription obtained there; use Microsoft’s direct installer for a compatible one-time Office license or an organization-provided build.

If the apps return after restart, the Mac may be managed. If activation is the only problem, do not repeat the uninstall. Microsoft supplies a separate Office license removal tool for specific activation troubleshooting, and it requires that you know the account and password needed to reactivate.

Step 8: Check Licensing, Billing, and OneDrive

Uninstalling Office does not cancel Microsoft 365. Apple says removing an app does not cancel a subscription, and Microsoft’s deactivation guidance says signing out of Office is also separate from uninstalling, removing documents, or canceling the subscription.

  • Want to free an Office sign-in? Use the Microsoft account or work/school account device controls. Remote sign-out can take time to reach the Mac.
  • Want to stop billing? Use Microsoft’s subscription cancellation process, or the store or retailer that sold the plan.
  • Want to remove OneDrive? Follow OneDrive’s own unlink and uninstall procedure. Do not delete a connected sync folder as an Office-uninstall shortcut.
  • Want to keep files? Verify local and cloud copies before changing the subscription. Microsoft warns that cancellation can reduce OneDrive and Outlook.com storage allowances.

That separation is especially important on shared Family plans and organization-managed accounts. Removing apps from one Mac is reversible; deleting cloud files or changing a subscription can affect other devices and people.

Review Large Files Only After the Office Decision Is Safe

Once Microsoft’s supported app-removal step is complete, a storage review can help you find large files without labeling them as leftovers. Sensei’s Large Files view can surface documents, Outlook exports, installers, and other sizeable local items for you to inspect.

Sensei Clean view showing Large Files for a deliberate post-uninstall storage review

As of September 2026, Sensei 2.1.2 requires macOS 14 or later. It cannot verify an Outlook backup, determine whether a container is safe to delete, unlink OneDrive, deactivate Office, or cancel Microsoft 365.

Size is a clue, not permission. Open a file, identify its owner and backup, and remove it only when you no longer need it.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does uninstalling Microsoft Office delete my Word and Excel files?

No. Removing the application bundles does not delete documents stored elsewhere. Confirm their locations and keep a compatible app or a supported Microsoft 365 reinstall route so you can open them afterward.

Will uninstalling Office delete Outlook emails on my Mac?

Moving only the apps to Trash is different from deleting Microsoft containers. Microsoft warns that its full uninstall sequence can remove Outlook data. Protect local-only material and verify a backup before continuing into the Library.

Do I need to delete UBF8T346G9 folders to uninstall Office?

Not for a basic app-only uninstall. Those Group Containers belong to the deeper Microsoft cleanup and can affect Outlook and shared Office data. Delete them only for a deliberate reset with a verified backup.

Does uninstalling Microsoft 365 cancel my subscription?

No. App removal, Office sign-out or deactivation, and subscription cancellation are separate operations. Manage billing through Microsoft or the store or retailer that sold the subscription.

Does removing Office also uninstall OneDrive or Teams?

No. OneDrive and Teams are their own applications and services. Keep them out of the Office selection unless you have a specific reason and current vendor procedure for removing them.

Can Sensei uninstall Microsoft Office for me?

Use Microsoft’s current Finder and data-backup procedure for the suite because it defines the Outlook and container boundaries. Sensei is useful afterward for reviewing large local files, not for verifying mail, cloud, license, or billing state.

Uninstall Office Without Deleting Local Data

The safe path is intentionally narrow: protect Outlook material, quit the apps, move the selected Microsoft 365 bundles to Trash, and restart. Only continue into ~/Library when you deliberately want a profile reset and can prove the important data exists elsewhere.

Check OneDrive, documents, deactivation, and billing on their own terms. After the supported uninstall is finished, Sensei can help you review large local files without pretending that every Microsoft folder is disposable.
