How to Check MacBook Battery Health
When a MacBook that used to last through the afternoon now needs a charger by lunch, start with the battery's condition—not the current charge percentage. To check battery health on a MacBook, open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery and read Battery Health. Click the Info button beside it to see the condition and Maximum Capacity when your model provides it.
Normal means macOS considers the battery to be functioning normally. Service Recommended means it holds less charge than it did when new or is not functioning normally. That is the useful first answer; cycle count adds context rather than replacing it.
Step 1: Check Battery Health in System Settings
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Click Battery in the sidebar. You may need to scroll.

Apple's current Mac help lists two condition labels:

Condition, Capacity, and Cycle Count Are Different Signals
These values are related, but they do not answer the same question.

A cycle does not have to happen in one day. Using 50% today, recharging, then using another 50% tomorrow adds up to one charge cycle. Plugging in twice is not automatically two cycles.
Maximum capacity also needs context. Apple says capacity normally declines as a lithium-ion battery chemically ages. On an Apple-silicon MacBook, capacity can sometimes show slightly less than 100% depending on the time between manufacture and first use. One percentage by itself is not a diagnosis.
Step 2: Check the MacBook Battery Cycle Count
System Information shows the three fields together without installing anything:
- Hold Option and click the Apple menu.
- Choose System Information.
- Expand Hardware if needed, then select Power.
- Under Battery Information > Health Information, find Cycle Count, Condition, and Maximum Capacity.

Is 1,000 cycles bad?
Not by itself. Apple's limit is model-specific. Most recent MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models in Apple's March 2026 table are listed at 1,000 cycles, while some older models are listed at 300 or 500. Check your exact model in Apple's cycle-count table rather than borrowing a number from another MacBook.
Apple says a normal battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at its maximum cycle count under normal conditions. I would not turn that into “79% is broken” or “999 cycles is healthy.” The condition label, actual runtime, model limit, and symptoms belong in the same decision.
Tip: Choose Apple menu > About This Mac before using the cycle table. A model year or screen size from memory is easy to get wrong, and older MacBooks can have a different limit.
Step 3: Check Battery Health in Terminal
For a support note or a quick text report, macOS can print the same high-level fields. Open Terminal and run:

Step 4: Interpret the Battery Health Percentage
There is no single percentage that predicts today's runtime. A MacBook at 90% maximum capacity can still drain quickly during video calls, 3D work, a large software build, background indexing, or high display brightness. A MacBook at 82% may still cover a light writing day.
Use this order:
- Read the condition. Service Recommended deserves attention even when the Mac still works.
- Compare maximum capacity with your real runtime. Capacity loss matters most when it changes what you can do away from a charger.
- Check cycle count against the exact model limit. Do not assume every MacBook uses 1,000 cycles.
- Look for abnormal behavior. Unexpected shutdowns, failure to charge normally, or a battery warning matter more than chasing a perfect percentage.
- Separate health from energy use. Activity Monitor's Energy tab can explain a short session caused by software, but it does not measure chemical capacity.

Step 6: Decide What to Do with the Result
Condition: Normal, capacity lower than new
Some decline is expected because rechargeable batteries are consumable components. If the Mac still covers your normal work, keep using Optimized Battery Charging or the model-dependent Charge Limit controls shown in System Settings > Battery. Apple says these features reduce battery ageing by adapting charging behavior; they do not restore capacity already lost.
Condition: Service Recommended
Back up the Mac, note the condition, maximum capacity, and cycle count, then use Apple's current service guidance. Apple says the Mac can continue to be used safely before it is checked, and service may make sense when reduced capacity affects your experience.
Tip: Take a text note of the three values before arranging service. It gives you a clean baseline without exposing the rest of your System Information report.
Do not treat a utility's percentage as permission to open a built-in MacBook battery yourself. Apple directs built-in-battery replacement to Apple, an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or a qualified provider using genuine parts; Self Service Repair is available only for eligible models and experienced repairers.
Near or past the model's cycle limit
Reaching the listed limit means the battery is considered consumed for the purpose of Apple's cycle guidance, not that the Mac must shut down on that cycle. You can continue using it, but reduced runtime is more likely and replacement may restore useful unplugged time. Let the exact model limit and your experience—not a generic internet threshold—guide the timing.
Should You Calibrate or Reset the Battery?
Do not use a full discharge as a repair for lost maximum capacity. Apple's current battery guidance describes that loss as chemical ageing; draining and recharging the battery cannot reverse that process or restore capacity already lost.
If a displayed percentage appears stuck or charging behaves unexpectedly, follow Apple's current charging checks. Apple recommends current software and says an Apple-silicon Mac only needs a restart for the SMC-related step. Manual SMC reset applies to Intel-based Macs, where the exact sequence depends on the model.
